Welcome to Imythess, the border between dreams and reality. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Imythess is a creative writing board where you narrate the story of a character in the medieval land of Imythess, on the planet Chaon. Each topic is an opportunity for your character to interact with the world and its peoples by cooperatively writing pieces of a story with other members, one post at a time. We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

Each step further into the ancient woods took greater and greater energy as what sunlight there was gradually faded away. Aiden never liked coming to these woods or the marches bordered it. But the trail he’d been following for days had led him here, and there was little chance that he’d be abandoning his quest just because of a few spiders...a few large spiders. The elf shuddered to think of the hulking beasts which resided deep in these woods. He wasn’t a big spider fan to begin with...but the ancient creatures which resided here...were simply beyond words.

Even now, as the sunlight was almost completely blocked by the almost black foliage above, Aiden could just feel presences lurking nearby, just waiting to strike out in the darkness. “Well you’re be waiting a long time, you bloody bastards,” the elf muttered, drawing his sword and closing his eyes a bit as he focused on the blade. His eyes glowed a deep red as he muttered, “Thasti shadi.” At the spellwords, flame suddenly engulfed the blade, dousing Aiden’s surroundings in a bright red light.

“There, that’s better,” he muttered, listening keenly as branches all around shuddered with movement. Likely the animals moving away from the light, Aiden thought as he stepped forward once again, using his lit blade as a torch or sorts as he made his way deeper into the darkened forest. The elf ignored the fact that the sword suddenly made him an easy target amongst the tightly packed trees of the forest. For now, seeing where the hell he was going was far more important than whether or not he could be seen.

An important tip from a reliable source had led him here to what seemed like the depths of darkness to begin with. His travels through the years had brought him into contact with a shadowy group called Divschatten repeatedly, often with disastrous results. His most recent encounter left him determined to find out what he could about the group and destroy it, if at all possible. Then again, the group’s leader was said to be a mage of immense power...one that few could hope to take on alone. Information, Aiden reminded himself, That’s why I’m here. Nothing more. I’m not here to take them on alone or bring one back with me. Just a quick in and out operation and I’m done. Nonetheless, Aiden couldn’t help but feel that this wouldn’t be so simple...nothing ever really was.

Then again, this was a rather random tip from a patron-filled bar in Balefire. This whole thing could have turned out to be a wild goose chase, an eventuality that Aiden wouldn’t have been entirely disappointed with. But if there was even a chance that information on Divschatten could be obtained and brought back to Norwood or even other rangers, then perhaps the darkness that had hung over the continent recently could begin to be lifted and normal, hard working people could rest easier in their homes. Despite the loneliness and dangers of the journey, Aiden’s determination to do what he could increased with each and every step. He was intent on facing the darkness, alone if needbe, and fighting until he’d won or perished. The only problem was...he had no idea what was waiting for him. . .

Aiden stopped and waited, leaning against a nearby tree as he rested. Taking care of the large cobwebs strung all around, the elf allowed himself a moment of silent thought as he considered his next step. Hours of careful searching had brought few clues that anything but the ancient spiders themselves had ever come across this place. I wouldn’t be surprised really, the elf thought, I wouldn’t like having my base of operations in a place like this either, if I could help it. Besides a few signs of ancient structures long overgrown with weeds and trees, there was absolutely nothing here to suggest that anything related to Divschatten had ever been here. In his experience, wherever that group was involved, a strong aura of evil could be detected. However, there was nothing of the sort here. Just the general feeling of...tension caused by the strong creatures surrounding him.

“Speaking of which,” Aiden muttered to no one in particular as he slowly backed away from his position. “Time to get the heck out of here. . .”

The day was slowly drawing to a close, the bright sun finding its place to rest as the moon began to peer over the edge of the earth. It was not night yet, but it would be soon enough. The dark swamp did nothing to help the effect of growing evil, if anything it added a sense of suspense, like someone was always watching you, or waiting to jump out of the bushs and consume your flesh. Chaos was not to fond of this part of the forest, bugs were everywhere, climbing around and getting into everything. The sticky marsh mud below his feet didn’t help the movement, his heavy bulky body leaving large foot prints as he walked. The smell clawed at his nostrils, musty damp growth, like decaying bodies. He just plan hated everything about the marsh.

But he was here non the less. His ventures brought him here, in search of a man who owed him money. Well he found the man a few days before, and spent a while feasting on his body. And as a added bonus he was able to ambush a assassian, one who was to meet the man he killed. They went round for round until the coward left like a small fragile kid. This was not enough amuzment for the demon, and he was starting to get extremely bored. His massive cutter was itching for a fight. Chaos was all decked out in his gear. Full body armor, helmet resting on his shoulders. He looked like a massive guardian of hell, sent to reap souls from this world. But it was not just the look, but also the presence he gave off. The feeling of murder and death, the stench of dead body and dried blood. He was almost a very essence of evil

Creatures ran about, apparently trying to get away from the big oaf. His metal boots clanked down the path as he sighed, looking form side to side he tried to find a place to rest. It was obvious this day held nothing for him, and was just going to end like most days, boring and alone. So his mind began to wander, in and out of things that would seem childish to most. Nothing important was going through his mind until he saw a small glow up ahead. His attention snapped as he eyed the glow, placing his hand on his dagger of torment. With a crooked evil smile he edged forward, trying to be silent but failing the entire time. After a second or two he gave up, and just clomped through the bush.

He emerged from the bush on the other side of a path, a path that held the glow. Seeing the man by a tree made chaos smile, someone was actually here in this swamp, and was a perfect prey. But something was odd about this man, a feeling the red demon could not shake. Some how he knew this man, some how he knew what was about to happen.

Aiden took a moment to get his bearings before planning his way out of the darkened forest. The creatures of the night were already beginning to stir, making this place even more dangerous than it was just hours ago. The elf knew for a fact that the giant spiders which resided here would soon begin their hunts...and Aiden had no desire to be seen as prey. “Time to move then,” he muttered, gathering his cloak around him and starting forward, trying his best to retrace his steps, but generally taking a northerly path.

The elf heard rather than saw something approaching his position rapidly. It quickly became clear that this something was not a native creature of this forest—the predators here couldn’t be heard until just before they struck. Clearly something far more clumsy was crashing closer. “Great,” the elf muttered, silently touching the glyph tattooed on his right forearm. “It’s not like I needed more problems to deal with tonight.” The elf closed his eyes as the magic stored within the glyph began to take effect, revealing the alignments of the creatures hidden all around. Most of the presences registered as neutrals, simply looking for food to survive.

But one stood out among the others, filled as it were with open hatred and evil towards anything around it. “Well well well, what have we here?” the elf muttered to himself, opening his eyes and sighing a bit at the obvious duty he would have to perform. From the presence alone, Aiden assumed that whatever was following him was from Divschatten—there was no way that such an occurrence would be a coincidence. Perhaps I was closer to the location of their activities than I thought. If that’s the case, once I finish with this one perhaps I should continue my search…or get help. I didn’t come here to fight them all, of course.

As Aiden allowed his thoughts to collect, the elf placed a hand on the hilt of his treasured lightning blade and slowly drew the blade from its scabbard. Turning on his heel, the elf didn’t bother to locate his opponent before shouting, “You might as well come out, demon! You’ve been loud enough to disturb every creature in this forest, much less me. I’ve come here to hunt Divschatten and any who associate with them. Hopefully you’re a part of that group as well…that way I won’t feel so guilty after I kill you. . .”

Chaos stopped, his heart beating faster and faster with every second. Not because he was nervous or scared, but because the taste of blood could be felt on his lips, the excitement of a new fight, a hunt he hadn’t had in a while. All of this was pouring into his mind body and soul, fueling the every evil he held inside. His body stopped because of the voice ringing out over the bush line. It was obvious this voice belonged to the same person that the dim light did. How foolish of him to weild such a light in a place like this, chaos of course knew of the dangers here in the woods, Him being one of the worst.

So what was he to do? This man was calling him out, saying he might as well show himself anyway. And apparently he was here hunting his guild family, trying to kill them it seemed. Well it was a shame non of them would be able to face this man, for Chaos would be the first, and last divschatten this man would ever meet. With a big breath, the armored brute stepped out of the brush, his letifer in his right hand. Alrite alrite you caught me. Shall I come out with my hands up? He tried to be a jester about it, always adding humor to his situations. But that soon left as he got a good glance at the mans face. It was obvious he was a woodelf, tall and slender, his skin complimenting him well. And by the looks of it he was well armored to, a nice sword in his hand. But what stood out the most was who he was.

YOU! That damn wood elf! Chaos screamed, his voice echoing out in the thick marsh. The giant red demon knew this man, he had fought this man before, Back before his vacation from imythess. But now he was stronger, as well as this man he assumed. He had attacked chaos after he had done a job in Cascadia, and apparently was inspired to hunt his brethren. But he was not going to allow this man to live. Not walk away like he did last time. Today his fate would be sealed.

Aiden waited patiently as the glow from his flaming longsword filled the immediate area. With his longsword in his left hand and his lightning blade in his right, the elf felt fairly confident that he could hold his own against whatever his opponent had in store within this darkened forest. Perhaps I should be worried over whether or not other creatures will join us, the elf thought, chancing quick glances all around.

But as his opponent stepped forward, the elf’s thought about anything interfering was quickly swept away. Even from this distance, the unknown man’s thick armour glinted softly in the light from Aiden’s blade. An amazingly familiar blade could be seen in the man’s right hand, drawing a concerned glance from Aiden. “That blade,” he muttered softly, allowing his mind to drift back to a soft, still night in Cascadia broken by a horribly violent act. Then, as now, the elf could feel that blade’s horribly evil aura from a distance.

“I remember that one now,” Aiden muttered, tightening his grip on both blades as he stepped forward. “And I remember that blade too. I’ll have to be extremely careful...I can’t imagine that they have gotten less dangerous in the time that has passed.”

” YOU! That damn wood elf! came a scream from Aiden’s armored opponent.

“I guess he recognizes me too,” the elf muttered with a sad grin. “Well, as long as he knows he’s not attacking a stranger, I feel much better.” Raising his voice so that it could be heard by Chaos, Aiden shouted, “I suppose this means you’re actually of Divschatten? Well then I wouldn’t suppose that you would mind telling me where their base of operations is? That would be of great help to me. You could even say that you were serving a great cause just before you died…which, my friend, will be soon.”

Aiden lowered his voice as he gathered magic around him for the fight ahead. His eyes flashed a bright red as he prepared himself, raising his lightning blade just a bit before muttering to himself, “Then again, I don’t really need the help. I’d much rather make sure you were dead before worrying about anything else.” Taking a small step forward, Aiden swung his right hand forward, swinging his lightning blade as he shouted, “Moji!” At the spellword, a powerful blast of lightning sprang from the blade, streaking towards Chaos at an unbelievable speed.

“Let’s begin, shall we?” Aiden said to no one in particular as he too surged forward towards his opponent with both swords raised. . .

Chaos sighed, he wanted a fight, but he wanted one like normal, a weak lost man who knew nothing of fighting, lost while passing through. Those men he could fight and kill with out even breaking a sweat. However he knew this elf, and remembered the fight very vividly. It took all he had to survive against this opponent, and even now with his skills and new power he knew this fight would yet again test him. His mind began to quicken, his body flexed to build better muscle support, his heart pumped faster and his eyes narrowed in, the helmet on his face giving off a evil look, like a dragon had rested itself on his head. His jagged razor sharp armor was not a friendly sight either, if this elf did in fact remember him, then chaos would have to step his game up, pulling out new tricks from all kinds of sleeves.

The reaction from this man told Chaos that he did remember him, and that this fight would prove their strength. Chaos could not help but smirk, as this man talked about killing him, and finding the guild hall. Only when hell froze over would chaos tell about the guild, or no longer exist on this planet. He gripped the handle of his letifer, his other hand free for the time being. Listen Elf, what makes you think i would tell you anything, let alone the wereabouts of my guild hall. You must be one stupid man. He gave a chuckle, the thick foul aroma of death drifting form his decaying mouth. This fight will not be the same as our last meeting. Tonight you will lie in a pool of blood, all your lives work and effort thrown done a hole, cause you decided to hunt the deadlist creatures and alive. Well your luck just ran out, cause you got your wise!

A roar went off as he watched the man, two swords held in his hands. Like lightning they pulsed at him, moving faster than normal things he was use to. But this dosent mean he wasnt ready for it. With the instant blink of his eyes he was gone, only to reappear behind his target a second later. A growl and a swish rang out in the air as his blade came across the mans back in a diagonal slashing motion. But this wasnt all. As the letifer aimed to slash his back, chaos slipped his dagger of torment out, and moved it across the elfs lower back. This was to cut at the bottom of his spine, hopefully numbing his body and killing all movement to it. Ruthless murder is what this would be. No games this time.

Aiden continued his forward charge, making sure to keep his eyes averted from the intense light of the lightning blast ahead. At the same time, the elf focused his senses, using his ability to sense alignments to keep a general track on his opponent. As the distance between them grew shorter, Aiden prepared for his opponent to dodge to the left or right, readying both of his blades in preparation for a quick strike towards his opponent to end the fight.

However, to his surprise, the deep feeling of evil which Aiden had been tracking suddenly shifted position...and reappeared directly behind. A transport spell, the elf thought, gritting his teeth as he continued running forward as if he hadn’t noticed. Why on earth does it seem that every person I fight has to know that bloody spell! Can't people just run?! Roaring in frustration, Aiden suddenly reversed direction, planting his right foot and turning with incredible speed. With practiced ease, the elf raised his longsword and parried Chaos’ dangerous letifer, catching the blade just as it began its left to right diagonal slash.

With a tight twist, the elf brought his lightning blade up to catch Chaos’ hidden dagger in midswing. Aiden grunted with the effort, but took no time to revel in his momentary stops. Still as strong as I remember, I suppose, the elf thought, gathering magic once more for his next attack. He doesn’t seem to be taking his time like last time, though. Perhaps that means he won’t underestimate me again…which means he’ll try to be far more crafty than last time. Shame. I didn’t want this to drag out.

“Thar!” the elf shouted, closing his own eyes as a flash of magic suddenly appeared between the two combatants, bathing the dark forest in a shower of powerful white light. At the same time, a thunderous clap of sound erupted, deafening both fighters in mere seconds. There, now we’re even, I think the elf thought, opening his eyes and dancing backward in order to take advantage of his newly blinded opponent. If Chaos wasn’t willing to drag this out, then neither was the elf—he preferred quick finishes anyway.

Finishing his quick retreat, Aiden planted his foot once more and quickly brought his right arm and the blade it clasped forward. “Moji!” the elf shouted, though he couldn’t hear his own spellword at this point. Averting his eyes once more, Aiden grimaced in satisfaction as he saw his blast of lightning surge towards his opponent just a handful of meters away. . .

Chaos watched as the man kept running forward a few feet, making him have to reach with the blades, but then the elf turned, his heels stopping in the ground and his body double backing to face chaos once again. Hos duel blades met the demons, both sets of blades clashed, sending sparks and clanking noises as they pushed to try and out strengthen each other. He knew this elf was skilled with a blade, and it was dumb to try and fight this man head on like this, they both would be there for hours just swatting at each other. so chaos needed to think of another plan.

just as he tried to push with more force, a blinding light filled his eyes, which was also accompinied with a ear splitting crack. Chaos jumped back three steps, backing up as fast as he could. He was unaware if this man could still see or hear either, but something was on its way. Chaos could feel the pressure building up, and who was dumb enough not to take advantage of this moment. so chaos would also use this, and hopefully do what his opponent did not expect. With all his strength the demon threw the dagger of torment right at the man, sure it was a blind throw, but it was thrown where the elf should have been, and had enough strength and speed to go further if the tried to back up. But chaos also needed a defense, in case something was thrown his way.

Dropping done to his knee he felt the bulker on his back, and pulled it off, planting it in the ground in front of him and ducking behind it. It was a magic shield that had the ability to deflect and reflect spells. If anything was shot or thrown at him it would be blocked and sent back at the elf. The whole time chaos wiped at his eyes, his vision coming back. He could now see good enough to continue. Still a little blury he would have to be careful for a few seconds, his vision be real important in the next few steps. He did a spell that covered his body in a cloak of darkness, wrapping it around his body he stepped out form the buckler, leaving it there in the dirt.

With the cloak on he stood, being a little harder to see cause of the darkness. A few feet to the right of the buckler eh stopped and shouted. Is that all you got elf!? He partially wanted to see what he blocked with the shield, but more importantly he wanted to call the elf out. About five feet from the edge of the marsh and woodland, he prepared for another attack.

Aiden’s vision blurred a bit as the intensity of the light around him forced him to squint slightly. He couldn’t see whether or not his attack landed, but he assumed that Chaos wouldn’t be felled so easily. Charging to the right, Aiden kept his eyes on Chaos’s blinded form…and then gasped in pain as something stabbed into his leg. Aiden stifled a small cry as he looked down, realizing that a dagger was protruding from just above his knee.

Reaching to pull the blade from his leg, the elf was suddenly gripped with a startling vision of his longtime friend Eonian…being grasped by a strong pair of dragon’s claws at some faraway location.

“Aiden,” the image gasped before Eonian slumped lifelessly.

“Eonian!” Aiden found himself shouting, unbidden tears springing to his eyes. The blade! the elf thought, his mental strength providing a calm in the storm of emotion buffeting him. In a fit of strength, the elf pulled the blade from his body and stuck the bloody blade into his swordbelt. Tears still flowed from the elf’s eyes as he looked back towards Chaos’ position. And then, Aiden’s eyes widened in horror as he realized that his own spell was being flung back at him.

There was no time to truly dodge the burst of magic, much less heal the bleeding wound on Aiden’s leg. “Damn,” he muttered, closing his eyes and drawing his blades close to his body. A split second before impact, the elf’s eyes shot open once more, his eyes colored a deep red with the force of his magical exertion. “Shol!” he shouted, disappearing from the spot just as his lightning blast hurtled past, churning the ground beneath it before slamming into a tree, blasting apart the ancient wood and wreathing the nearby plants in a red flame.

Is that all you got elf!

As the elf reappeared in the top of a tree meters away from his last location, he could hear Chaos’ taunting shout. “Oh shut up,” the elf whispered to no one in particular as he placed a hand to his bleeding leg. With the removal of the dagger, the dangerous mental effects seemed to have faded just a bit, much to Aiden’s relief. He didn’t bother to wipe the tears from his eyes as he tore a piece of cloth from his cloak and wrapping it around his leg. Pulling tightly, Aiden muttered the incantation for his healing spell and closed his eyes as it took effect, swiftly binding the torn skin and muscle beneath.

That’s a dangerous little ability too, the elf thought, making note that he would have to be careful of Chaos’ apparent ability to reflect spells. That would make this fight much more dangerous…or interesting, assuming the elf could use that fact to his advantage. “Shout while you can,” the elf muttered, finishing his spell and leaning against the strong tree branches around him. “In just a bit, I’ll come down there and shut you up for good. . .”

The blindin glight and ringing sound was still present, but only for a few more seconds. The red brute was slowly regaining his senses, and would also regain control of this fight. He had no idea what had occured to the elf during the distraction, and had no way of knowing either, for now. His dagger of torment was gone and one of his letifers was laying a few feet away from him on the ground. He had but one dagger, a sword and a cleaver left, but this was all he would need to finsih off the man. He gripped his unholy cutter with both hands, but did not release it from his back just yet. As the light vansihed from his eyes he looked around, not seeing anysign of the elf in front of him. A quick spin revealed that the elf was up in a tree, recovering from the dagger that seemed to wound him. Moving his left hand to replace the buckler he wispered under his breath.

The spell cause fear would soon activate, filling this elf full of un wanted and sudden fear fo the demon. His heart and mind would counter, rethinking the fight and if he really wanted to continue fighting this being of destruction. With the remaining effects of the dagger there was no way the elf could not feel any fear of this demon. but he was not done with his onslaught yet. While he had the elf ina corner he would not let up, attacking over and over until he found victor in this fight. As they fear spell took effect chaos activated his tattoo, causing two extra arms to grow forth from his torso under his real two arms. They stretched out a bit and all moved to place their hands ont he handle of his cutter, which now had four metal meaty hands on it.

With a blink chaos moved from the ground to up in the air, a couple of feet in front and above the elf. With this sudden movement he pulled the cutter out with all four hands and used the momentum of his falling combined with the strength and impact his four arms would provide. The sword came down like a massive bolt of lightning, aimed right for the elf who was just finishing healing by the looks of it. If this sword landed it would undoubtly smash the man to a million bloody bits. If he missed even by a inch, the branch would be destroyed and depending on how close the elf was he would still sustain few injuries.
