We call this role-playing, because you assume the identity of your character as if it were your own.

In order to play, you must register an account for each character you would like to write about, and begin their tale by filling out their basic profile information: Race (human, elf, demon, etc.), class (warrior, mage, etc.), physical appearance, and any other personal details you would like to describe. You are also encouraged to come up with some background history information for what your character's life has been like up to the point at which their story in Imythess begins.

There is no approval process or application required to join, so long as you follow the rules then you are free to write whatever character details you choose. Registration is simple, fast, and completely free.

It had been a rough night in the Dragon Spine Mountains, a blizzard had tormented the region for most of the night and had only just now layed its head to rest. Now the sun was slowly peaking through the mountain tops as it ascended from the horizon and the day seemed to start more peacefull then the night had ended. Altought this was not entirely true, from time to time one could hear swearing and cussing from the mountain pass as a tall figure tried to make its way toward the end. The man, called Daelen had entered the regions many years ago to train and refine his skills, but the closer one looked the more it seemed he was on the verge of dying rather than one who had refined his skills.

Around his body was a dark and torn cloak, wich he used to keep himself warm. That was what he made himself believe anyway, the cloak had been diminished to more of a small cloth and did not give a decent protection from the cold. Beneath it was a crumbled down armor, it had been frozen and could not withstand the hardships it had to endure over the years. The only thing slightly protecting him from being instantly frozen was a cloth shirt and pants, although it was torn here and there, it kept most of the bodyheat in.

The most disturbing thing however, besides the signs of frostbite, was a large wound on his leg, coloring the snow on the trail behind him red. Before the blizzard had started the night before, a wolf attacked and bit open his leg. Although Daelen had won in the end, after a night in the cold and a few hours of trying to leave the mountain range, the pain and bloodloss were starting to do him in. Slowly he crawled up over what he hoped was the last piece of mountain and luckily he could see the treeline as he pulled himself up to stand on his good leg. It probally had been better if he didn't try to stand up because with the icy ground beneath his feet. With the last of his strength he tried to remain balanced as his foot slipped away. A shot of pain crawled up his bad leg as he smacked to the floor and started sliding and tumbeling down the slope with a loud cry only to stop at the foot of the mountain.

Vaguely he heared an echo as he lay there, slipping in and out of conciousness. 'Did i make it?' the thought had only just crossed his mind before everything went black.

It had been an age since the Wanderer had last seen fit to use this particular pass through the Dragon Spine Mountains. It was cold, lonely, and of little use to anyone. For these very reasons, it was excellent for those wishing to find solitude, or minimize collateral damage.

Of course he was there for the latter.

Xrtchwdg had been hinting lately that there was a way to open a portal straight to the abyss, with disastrous consequences for anyone in the vicinity. He'd been vague, and for that reason Melmoth decided that trying to learn the technique within sight of civilization was not a good idea. The demon's sense of humor was right up his alley, but even the best of jokes got old when the joke's on you.

So here he was, trudging through endless miles of snowy evergreens, enjoying the scenery, certain it would all be destroyed by morning. Small woodland creatures scurried about, apparently unafraid of the old man walking by. He wasn't quite certain if his disguise was just that good, or the fuzzy little beings hadn't learned to be afraid of humankind yet. Muttering harsh words about furry things everywhere, he trekked on.

- - -

Soon enough, he came within spitting distance of the mountains and the treeline began to thin. He would move up to the very depths of the pass, and- and he was interrupted by some local falling down the mountain. Pity. Melmoth made a mental note delaying wide spread destruction until he had examined the body. There was loot to be had.

Shaking a thin layer of snow off his frosted cloak, Melmoth bounded out of the treeline towards the fallen man.

- - -

"I'll be damned. Well, moreso..."

The man was alive. Somehow. In bad condition, and with worse loot, there little reason to bother with him. What was another frozen corpse in this wasteland? But he was stopped by a quick look at the man's face. Even unconscious and half dead, the man registered as evil. Or perhaps it was simply not-good? Close enough, either way. The man was fellow scum, and more importantly, he had potential to be swayed to some purpose the guild might enjoy. He had no idea what that might be, but collecting debts was always a good idea.

Shuffling about in his sack of traveling goodies, he drew forth a spare cloak, wineskin, and wooden cup. He draped the cloak over the man, from head to foot, and sat, waiting for the man to wake or perish.

Almost a half day had passed after Daelen had lost conciousness and a stranger had found him at the foot of the mountain. After passing out he had spend the morning haunting the depths of his soul to regain the little life he had left. Now, still unaware of the man sitting next to him was now slowly regaining his senses. The first thing he felt was the snowy wet ground beneath his body, laying in the snow had soaked his clothing and chilled him down to the bone. Though the backside of his body was slightly warmer than the side that had been in contact with the snow al this time.

Opening his eyes he found himself covered by a blanket or atleast somekind of fabric that was used to keep one warm. "this means someone was here, or still is?" he thought,as his right hand scurried through the snow in search of the small dagger hidden on his upper-right leg. Not knowing the intent of the one who placed this blanket over him he knew better to be save than sorry. Trying to pull it out of the leather strap around his leg moved his leg, if only a little, it was enough to make him clench his teeth to keep in a painfull grunt. The wolf had damaged some of the muscle tissue in his leg and moving his leg was not the best idea at the moment.

Tightening the grip around the hilt of his dagger he pulled the large piece of cloth from is upperbody and lifted his head up. Noticing it was a cloak that was laying over him he turned his head to the side, to find a older looking man sitting next to him. Something told him, that dispite the appearance of the man, it was someone who was expierenced in battle and not one he could be able to overpower in te state he was now.

"keep it cool Daelen, it is the first sign of life in a very long time, go with the flow he said to himself as he lifted his upperbody up, carefull to keep his leg still and carefull to keep the dagger hidden beneath the cloak still covering his legs. Seeing that the sun was already past its highest point, the tempature already slowly starting to grow colder and his leg still in a bad condition, he knew he had to find some shelter or town and get his leg taken care of before the night would set in.

"How long have I been out?" he asked the man next to him as he remembered he heared something or someone before he lost conciousness

Time does odd things when you ignore it. As Melmoth sat watch over his nameless charge, moments stretched into hours, and the hours became almost geological in scale. He did a lot of thinking, of shoes, and ships, and sealing wax, but when it was over it felt like bare moments had passed. He had several of these episodes, breaking his trance only to sip of the wine and brush the accumulating hoarfrost off of himself before sinking back into his mind.

He was in no great danger of freezing, he reminded himself every so often. He was the next best thing to being made of fire, after all. The guy under the cloak was not so lucky, but somehow he managed to pull through. Every time he checked, there was still a rising cloud of breath from the man. It was admirable that, beat up as he was, he had not yet succumbed to death. All the more reason, therefore, to stick around and see to it that he made it through. Tough as nails warrior types were a rare breed being crowded out by the pansy mages more every day.

Presently, he broke from his trance. Perhaps he picked up on some sound, or movement, but ere long, the man sat up. Melmoth watched him, not particularly scared, despite the dagger in his hand. The man was still weak, he would bet, and well withing range to be smothered with his wings of flames if things became unpleasant.

"So, you pulled through. You've been dead to the world for... Say, half a day. I expected you to be dead a few hours ago. Good job, but unless you're a healer of some sort, the real fun is yet to come." Melmoth picked up the wineskin, and tossed it within arm's reach of the man. It wasn't a lot, but it was better than warmed snow by a great margin. "Don't drink it all."

(OOC: read my detailed description if you havnt read my pm yet, made some changes to Daelen, might wanna know those before replying)

"Thanks, I wont" Daelen said as he reached over to pick up the wineskin. After taking a few small sips of the wine and feeling the fluid slide down his throat his body regained a little warmth from the alcohol. Slowly with the life returning he sunk in thought for a brief moment, what the man had said was true. He'd have to get some sort of healing because his leg would start giving more problems his body could handle. More than that, he worried what would happen if his own heart would stop beating. His second heart would kick in and with it a side of him he had yet to learn to control. Not that he was afraid of that side of his being, it was more a resentment of losing himself and letting the other out.

"Yea I know what you mean" he replied "I need to get this wound closed before it does me in. Thank you for taking care of me, this cloak is probally one of the things that kept me alive."

Meanwhile he put the dagger back in its strap, knowing he did not have anything to fear from this man. Tossing back the wineskin he reached over and held out his hand. "The name is Daelen and i'm in your debt" Normally this was something he would not say as quickly as he did this time, but for a stranger to save his live as this man had done he was willing to make an exception. Furthermore it was the only one around who was able to help him get to a save place.

"But for now that has no worth untill I get myself healed in the hours to come or I dont think i will be able to repay that debt.

Daelen already felt the struggle within his mind as the second heart in his chest was gaining power in its beats. Although not enough for it to cause problems he felt a darkness spreading through his body, although slowly, he knew whatever kind of heart was put into his chest years ago was now waking up and had started to pulsate through his body. With every beat a blackness being pumped through his veins.

Melmoth shrugged uncomfortably at the mans thanks. He did enough to give the man a fair chance fair bad odds, if he couldn't fight for his life, he was dead, and Melmoth would be no help. If he pulled through, doors would be opened for him, or at least the hiding places of their keys would be hinted at.

Been a long time since you've been on a recruitment mission. Another treasure hunter? Surely you don't need another warrior, not after last time. A grin appeared in midair, followed shortly by a mirror image of Melmoth, if the mirror was one of the carnival kind. Much taller than Melmoth's already extremely unusual height, Xrtchwdg loomed as he paced the camp, conspicuously leaving no footprints and drawing no recognition from the other man.

Which was not surprising in the least, come to think of it. The moment Xrtchwdg began to speak, Melmoth felt his time sense go screwy again, leaving him motionless as the world around seemed to stop, all except his demon counterpart. The demon leaned down in front of his frozen face and grinned once more, this time revealing that the fangs he usually had were gone, replaced by Melmoth's pearly whites. Voice rang out in his head, but Xrtchwdg's mouth did not move, Cut his throat and leave. There's something wrong here, I can feel it. I can't say what, you know my limitations, I just know something is wrong, and I don't know if you can handle it. With his message finished, the grin disappeared, along with the rest of Xrtchwdg. Time snapped back into motion.

Melmoth looked at the ground a moment, digesting the news, before shaking his head and looking up at an offered hand. The decision was made. He reached out, and shook Daelen's hand, careful to keep his claws cool and undetected through the process. "Melmoth the Wanderer. Honestly, I don't know what to do with you. You can wrap the wound, perhaps ice it, and hope that holds out until you can walk out of here. Amputation is another remedy I am familiar with, but I doubt that is an appealing choice. I saw nothing living for three days the way I came in. Perhaps you know of some closer civilization?"

A feint smirk appeared on Daelens face as he heared melmoth speak of amputation. "I dont think ampution would be good idea, foremost because I wont be able to walk out of this godforsaken place, spend way to many time here" With that being said something came to mind. Recalling the years he spend traveling through the mountains, trying to forget past happenings also made him remember something else.

It had not been the first time his life was on the line, it had been a couple of years ago, maybe four at the most. He had drawn the attention of a dragon newborn, although not as strong as his parents it was a worthy and challeging adversery none the less. During the battle the young dragon had lashed out and gave him a life threatning wound. With the essence of life flowing out, the seal on the demonic heart had weakend enough to gain sycronisation with his human heart.

It was not that Daelen had lost control in that moment, more that the heart had gained some turf in his body and had started to alter him to something less.. human. With every beat of the demonic heart his veins had pulsed a orange/red color after that everything went blurry and he had lost consiousness. When he woke up he could feel he was different, changed, not much but something within him felt out of place.

After his normal heart had regained its pace and the seal around his other had entered a somewhat stable state he came to realise he should have died. His hand almost instictivily shooting towards his chest to the place the dragonling had hit him he found nothing. No blood, no wound, only the ripped shirt being the only remaining evidence of the clash.

In the meanwhile, his present state was slowly growing close to a dying one or atleast one where he knew the seal would not be able to keep the heart from beating and most likely break and vanish forever. The expression on his face went grim as he came to think of the things to come but somewhere his eyes gave hint of finding rest. He had made his discision, he had to accept this heart as a part of his body, hoping the change it brought would save his life in the process.

"Nothing in the direction I came from atleast, although I dont think I need to travel anymore. he finally replied after the moments of thought. Knowing this would only confuse the man who had only just saved his life he turned toward melmoth. "Dont worry, I'm not a madman..." and with that he told melmoth about his second heart, the seal to keep it from beating and the encouter with the young dragon.

Not a madman, huh?

Daelen's story was odd, at the very least. Possibly insane. However, the moment you thought something impossible was the moment it killed you. He'd seen enough impossible sights that it had become force of habit not to disbelieve something just because it was crazy. He would take proper precautions against against this getting out of control.

"Do your thing, then. I will stand out of harm's way, and beat you senseless if you lose control. So if you don't want more bruises than that fall gave you, keep in control, okay? Dealing with demons and their toys is unpredictable, dangerous work, to say the least."

He stood up and walked a dozen paces from Daelen, hand on Fate the entire time. The sword would not appreciate being used flat bladed, but he had little choice. If the boy was partly demonic, he was much more valuable than he had thought. Instead of being a pawn of either the guild or his own ends, he could be a full member. Some of the other guildsmen believed it better to have servants than peers, but he disagreed vehemently. A servant was limited by your inteligence. A peer had their own ideas, possibly better than yours. He would watch Daelen for a while, and offer membership if he looked likely to accept.

As he watched the man, a small, green moth fluttered out from somewhere in his belongings. He moved to swat it, but halted immediately, remembering just what the little bug could do. I forgot I had a method of healing... Of course, you're not going to use it. Of course. I'm just annoyed I'd forgotten I had the little guy around. He's not good for much, but he does a fine job patching me up. Hope I won't need him for this one.

"Wouln't want it any other way" he replied, a good hit against the head might be the only thing that could keep him from losing it completly. He grinned, 'Maybe I need to get hit in the head already for actually doing this idiotic thing' In the end, there was not much Daelen could do, a fate he was now forced to accept. A quick glance told him that melmoth had moved a fair amount away to observe a show that had not been shown many a times.

'Lets get this over with' ; A good ten minutes passed as he dwelled the insides of his soul, searching for.. searching for determenation and lingering on past memories. Having taken moment he needed there was no longer any intention of waiting wavering in his heart. With a deadly calm he swiftly pulled out his dagger and thrusted it deeply beneath his chestbone to ensure the demonic heart would rip out of its seal to save its master, or better said, its shell.

As he pulled out the dagger from his chest and his breathing becoming heavy he knew it was coming. Lifting up his arm to the cast aside the bloody piece of metal he noticed the veins on his arm became more visable. The demonic heart had started to break out of its year long prison and had started to arise, once more pumping the darkness through his veins. The sound of the heart beating started to become louder and his blood had changed its color to a reddish orange, lighting up with every beat.

A soft hiss escaped his lips as his hand shot to his ears, the sound of a heart beating becoming unbearable to his eardrums ; Pain shooting through his body as the shackles that had kept him in check for the past years broke and set free a monster. "Daelen, you die" The voice echoing through his head as he felt his whole human presence slip away into the depths of oblivion, forcefully being pushed into the same chains as the demonic heart had been in. Now it was his turn to enter a state of permanent slumber.

On the outside the change had continued on a steady pace, the darkness that the human called daelen had felt had gathered in his chest and started to crawl out through the fresh dagger wound in the form of a thick liquid substance. The liquid that encased his body formed somekind of muscle tissue and with this not only his personality and being was altered ; it was his entire outward appearance that was lost. The muscles had formed two large wings on his back, filled up the wound on his leg completely and were now starting to cover with a greyish skin, the rest of his body had already completed this part and now began showing signs of tatoo's on his arms, chest and back.

Two hours had passed when a raw voice released a cry toward the darkening sky ; It was finished. Rising to its feet and an almost surprised look appearing in his eyes as he examined his own body, almost as if it needed a moment of time to get used to it. A minute went by before the demon turned his new found body toward the man standing a good length away.. "You.." he said taking a few paces in his direction. "You must be Melmoth if I read this humans memory correctly. That is, if I didn't mess up this humans brain to much"

The entire process was one of the odder sights he'd had the privilege of seeing. Killing himself to save himself, he had to hand it to Daelen, it was a bold plan. It was disgusting, watching the goo cover him, but also fascinating. Watching it, he thought he saw some similarities with his disguise, and was willing to bet that this new demon was only a covering for the man beneath. He had never considered the possibility of symbiotic demons before, but if that truly was what he was seeing, he'd have to look into it further.

I wonder if you could have multiple symbiots? Do you really need a full heart for it to work? A stable of specialized demon exo-suits could be quite useful, but chest space is at a premium.

Grinning stupidly as a torrent of possibilities washed over him, Melmoth almost missed the demon turn around and address him. His words gave him new things to ponder, but he put them aside for the moment.

"I am Melmoth." He nodded once, before continuing. "But by your words you are not Daelen. Or not the same one I spoke to, at any rate. Introduce yourself, please."

Hand resting lightly on Fate's scabbard, he looked the demon over momentarily, deciding it was not a huge threat. He suspected it might have regeneration abilities beyond just fixing minor wounds on the host body, but couldn't be sure without cutting it a few times. Perhaps later. What really worried him was its unknown speed and strength. Thanks to the rune on his shoulder, Melmoth was much faster than most things, but demons were always tricky to gauge, and this one impossible since he had never seen one of its kind.

"As well, what kind of demon are you? I have seen never the likes of you before."

"Ah a bright one arn't you.. Yes you are very much correct. the demon replied as the corners of his lips curved upward a little and ending in a small grin. "I gave up my own name a long time ago,, so I guess you may call me Daelen, as a thank you to the human for giving me his body. And as to what I am, I guess you could label me as a demon from ancient times, nothing like the breed that hold the ground these days. We were born from darkness, we are darkness and we end in darkness" As he spoke he calmly lifted his right hand from his side, his fingertips slowly disolving into a dark smoke and returning then to normal when it reached the palm of his hand.

"Damn, my powers have been completly diminished" he muttered to himself and then looking up to continue answering melmoths question. "The human is now trapped in the same way as I were, I sealed him. I couln't get rid of him because without him this body would quickly disolve aswell. For that matter I am still tied to him but lets just say his company is something i can manage without. Never the less I guess I owe you for saving my host and extending his suffering, it gave me enough time to weaken the seal so I could surface when the opportunity arose"

Carefully he took another few paces, nothing harmfull, it almost looked as if he wasn't used to walking and the freedom he suddenly posessed. "I am sorry you could not meet me at my full power, I could have shown you some very usefull things from the old days, unfortunatly it will take some time for me to learn how to handle this body. Now for the time being, why don't you tell me what you are exactly, if my senses do not mistake me I am wrong for taking you as a human?"

"Quite wrong."

There was no need to keep up the deception any longer. Both of them were demons of a sort, and though he no longer suffered wing cramps since his transformation, he still disliked his illusion. Being rid of it was like removing a great weight from his shoulders, he could move freely without fear that some invisible part of him was going to bump into some passing person and give him away. So he brought his hands up and twisted the ring.

Immediately, his body turned silver. For a moment, it held this way, before rippling and drawing back from his extremities, first slowly, then picking up speed and racing toward the ring. On contact with the ring, the silvery stuff simply disappeared, presently leaving Melmoth standing before the Demon in his true form. Red from bald head to booted feet, claws and fangs softly glowing red, Melmoth was obviously a demon. But damned if he wasn't going to show off a little. With a flex of his mind, the air behind him ignited, bursting into two huge flaming wings. They hovered slightly outside of his clothes, but still allowed him the gift of flight. He never figured out how, and did not plan to question any time soon.

"As I said before, I am Melmoth the Wanderer. I am also an infused Archfiend, the only one known to exist in this blighted world, and a member of the Divschatten, a secret society of demonic brothers." He'd spoken of the Guild. His own identity could be known, that was his choice, but the existence of the guild was another matter entirely. AD had not said how secret the Divschatten was, but he took it to mean 'Most Secret'. Those who learned of it joined, died, or forgot. As he had no magic, mind erasure was out of the question, so he could freely invite this Daelen into the guild. "Will you join the Divschatten? We are always looking for new blood, and are quite capable of helping bring them to their full potential. Nay, we demand they achieve it and break through into legend."

It had been a sight when Melmoth twisted his ring and his body had turned silver; and what had beneath was something his senses could not pick up yet. He had know something to be off but could not lay his finger on it. Now with the red skinned demon standing before him he felt a little more at ease.

"Join the Divschatten?" he replied when Melmoth had finished his introduction. A secret society of demons, that would be something he could use, left behind that he could be in need of some new allies in these new and strange lands. It was something he could use to start regaining his strength for as he was now he was of no real help in a big fight

Although meeting this man here, far away from civilized life had been strange to say the least. Finding someone who was a member of a demonic guild was something that even struck him odd, a hand played by fate that had turned out to be something of great help to his own goals and perhaps even to those of the guild.

"Ok, I'll accept your invitation, I shall join the ranks of divschatten. Let us hope this will be a fruitfull cooperation to both parties involved. Is there something I need to do before I am allowed to become a member or did I just happen to cross paths with the one who can speak to word for it to be over with?"

"I wander, happen upon people, and things work out in highly unlikely ways. Coincidence ceased to be a viable explaination for me ages ago. Maybe you've got no strings, but someone's been pulling mine for far longer than I care to think of."

At times he had suspected everything from demons to gods, but whoever pulled his strings had remained silent through the years. Very annoying. However, he'd not died yet, and most of his encounters went well.

"There's nothing you need to do to join. I vouch for for you, and if anyone asks, that's enough. Unfortunately, if it you do something stupid, like bring a paladin or two to the guildhall, I get the responsibility of hunting you down. I'm busy enough without hunting ex-members. Be cool, and everything works out for all involved."

They were alone, he had no doubt of it. Old habits are hard to break, though, so he looked around for a moment before moving on. He explained, in detail, the location of the portal to the Divschatten's abyssal lair. He gave Daelen the guild password, and warned him of some of the dangers of entering the hall. Some of the other fun parts about the guild he'd have to find out for himself. The whole infinite changable space bit was fun to toy around with, but someone might want to show that off to the new member. Who was he to deny them that amusement?

"There's also an unofficial rule. Do not piss off AD. You can get away with angering some of the others, but AD is not one you want to chance it with. She's powerful and not entirely stable..." On a good day, AD was fair enough. Bad days, he could hardly tell what was going on in her mind.

"Do not worry, paladins have the annoying habit of getting on my nerves. Even if I should once get the absurd idea of bringing them to the guild, I'dd probally would have killed them after a few minutes of travel" he said laughing at Melmoths comment. "Dont think they'dd find me an appealing parter aswell"

After taking a few mental notes as he listened to Melmoth explaining where he needed to travel and other various other important information he started to wander in his own thoughts again. He'dd probally have some trouble of finding the portal, these lands after all were nothing of when he had roamed free in the ancient days. And ofcourse there were still humans, with his skills far below normal level and the natural rejection humans had of demons and the like he would be in for something if he found himself caught traveling on their grounds. In a flash the dagger that Daelen had used before he turned to his demonic self came to mind, with a quick turn around he scanned his surroundings, quickly spotting the dagger a few paces away.

"I will make sure to remember and not piss off this AD you speak of, thanks for the warning." Daelen awnsered to the unwritten rule. It would be a shame to start off new relations in that bad a fashion, even if it was only for his own best interest in this matter.

"I have one more thing to ask before I leave, is it ok for me to borrow your spare cloak untill I arrive at the guildhall. It will make my traveling a bit easyer, seeing as the strength has not returned to my wings yet. I will have to go by foot untill I can fully control this body."
