Fortunately I have been boning up on bone cancer in dogs. (No pun intended) Moses has developed a tumor on his cancerous leg. It is common and why they prefer to amputate as treatment. I read that although it increases pain dramatically, the tumor will also suddenly burst. God is in control.

Rosie, thanks! The past two days Moses has had is terrific. He blesses me everytime he acts like the puppy I raised. He is such a happy dog. I am really asking God to heal him, but I know in my heart, I need to accept the good days with the bad days and stay in reality mode.

Took Moses to the Vet and just got home. It is cancer as was diagnosed and has traveled about twice the distance up the bone comparing X-rays. It has not hit the socket yet and has not spread to a surrounding bone. The Vet says one of three things will happen.

The bone affected is so brittle that Moses by just step wrong on it or falling will break it. The pain would be unbearable. Normally they would amputate to buy more time if he was a candidate, but he never was due to age, weight and condition of his back hips. Putting Moses to sleep is the only recourse that day and I would not have to agonize when I will wonder when the time is right. I will know it by his cries of pain.

One of his organs will begin to shut down from the cancer. This is frightening for me to keep looking for these signs, but I will put him to sleep and not let him linger.

We will continue to manage the pain and increase it when necessary until the pain can no longer be medicated.

It has been 8-9 months now and we are still blessed with each day we have had with Moses. His appetite is still good, he has lost no weight, and he still is my happy baby, just a slower version and not as prone to standing. The Vet did say I do not have to bring him in this coming February for his annual shots that he will not need them, but he sure hopes with me that Moses might have another 8-9 months. There is no way of knowing, but now I can feel at ease that I did not put Moses through a different "treatment" plan that would not have had a better turn out than the gift of quality life that he has now.

Candy, I am so sorry about Moses. I pray these last few months will not be too painful for him. I certainly will be praying. If you feel like talking, you can call me.

Thanks so much, Barbara. I sure do love him! DH said he would not be with me when I have to take him in. That will probably be the hardest part yet to face.
