Does anyone know if it is harmful to lie a tower on it's side instead of having it upright?

Dick says most towers have vents on one of the sides. Don't restrict air flow. It will still run and work, but you would need to check with the manufacturer to see if this would void a warranty or be harmful.

Is it for space? I can't imagine.

I think it is best to keep the tower upright because of the CD and/or DVD-ROM drives. You could probably lay the tower on its side, but be careful when inserting discs into these drives. Also, make sure your fan vents are on the back and if there are any on the sides don't lay the unit on that side.

I'm sure MikeXG will see this and give his opinion as well, as he is a computer tech. I'm an IT Auditor with 18+ years of programming, system administration and audit experience, but have never gotten too much into the hardware support area.

OK. The vents are in the back and we rarely use the cd drive and have no CD writer or whatever you would call it. I got a new desk and it has a shelf underneath that would work well if the tower was on it's side. otherwise I have to have the tower beside the desk...thus the question.

Thanks, Dave.

One thing to watch on the shelves is if they get adequate ventilation. We bought matching computer desks - very pretty. There is a shelf with door for the tower case; problem is we both burned some components out (power supply two times and one video card) before the technician figured out it was lack of ventilation. Now we set them beside the computers with 6" of room all around to assure they get plenty of fresh air. On hot summer days, I put a small fan on them so they aren't recirculating hot air.
