I've been thinking - which is difficult because I have trouble concentrating right now. My period is 5 days late (maybe menopause?) and during pms, I crave cheese and milk and have ate some - deceive myself that it's protein and my bones need calcium. But it seems cheese during pms makes me half crazy: unable to think clear, emotionally depressed and unspecified angry plus it seems to sever my closeness to God. It also makes 3 milk glands in each breast painful from inflamation - which stops when my period starts or when I stop dairy.

I have had no cheese or dairy since yesterday and already feel more human - not totally human yet, but heading in that direction. Not feeling so out of control or swayed by every whim of emotion.

Can foods make us emotionally weird? Am I blaming food for what isn't food's fault?

:god: I don't know about food but when you hit menopause a lot of strange things happen. It is good go have a friend who has been through it or who is going through it with you. Then you can compare notes. One time when I was flowing very heavily I called a friend to ask her if she knew if I was in any danger. She said if I otherwise felt ok I was proabably ok. That was a long time ago and it has been a long time since it stopped completely. It is so strange how you forget all about it after that. The first summer my ears felt like I was always changing altitude, it was hard to go places because of all the flow, the clots were similar to postpartum and other strange things that now I can't recall. It seems to take forever and, in fact, can take up to 10 years. But then it is over and a new part of life begins. Hope you get to feeling better. Love in Christ, Carol

O.K., enough of wives tales. I don't know about individual cravings, but mine decreased. I also went through it completely in 6 years time without one single doctor visit or hormone. Yes, I had hot flashes and night sweats, but I have had worse experiences through pregnancy. Pregnancy is over a lot quicker, yeah, but then you have at least 18 years of ups and downs after childbirth. I dare a good and honest discussion about this subject, and credit my good hereditary genes if you must!

:animal1: I didn't go to the doctor either, though that was the time everyone was ranting and raving about hormone replacement therapy. I'm not one to take medicine but now with sarcoidosis (see special needs dieter) I take plenty. My mayo dr. thinks I will need it the rest of my life. Don't like that but who knows. I do take some natural things like COQ10 also.(not dr. suggestion) I have been feeling better lately since I started back on that. My first nephrologist took me off of all natural medicine. But with menopause, I just think that is a natural progression that we must go through. Hey, I love being pregnant and kids. Weird, huh? MY oldest is 34 and my youngest is 15. I didn't put the dog at the beggining for any reason, I just think he's cute. Love in Christ, Carol

I am glad I didn't go with hormone replacement. Now they are saying the risks and taking women off of it. I do however have to mention for depression I have been on Zoloft for 9 1/2 years. It saved my life, I am better and as far as they say there is no risk so I will not be getting off. This was a lifelong problem I had going back to early childhood. Some dispute the wisdom of anti-depreseents, but like this topic is all about the wisdom to determine what is best for our health-mental or physical.

LOL! My labor was easy but the pregancy was awful. Funny how we each relate to these important landmarks in life. Woof--I love doggies.

I loved your saying: pregnancy results in 18 years of ups and downs. ;)

I tried more cheddar and later that day and the next day I felt beside myself, not in control of my thoughts or emotions. I tried white havarti cheese and no physical or mental changes. I looked on the internet and cheddar's normal color is white to pale yellow - bright yellow cheese has had yellow or orange food color. I know I'm allergic to red food dyes so that may be the problem. WHew. I'll just get white cheeses now and avoid the yellow. I love the Internet because I can learn so much!

I have avoided hormone replacement, too. But I don't even take Advil or other analgesics but a couple times a year and only taken an antibiotic twice in 7 years - just don't get my prescriptions filled. I trust the body God gave me to heal itself and figured if I have pain then it's a reminder to slow down and rest so my body can self-heal. My husband is the same way - so we're a good match there.

My first pregnancy was easy but I had 36 hours of labor, 20 were hard labor with the last 4 on the delivery table. The cord had been around his neck so he was born black and had already pooped. The doctor said it was a miracle he wasn't dead or retarded. He's my miracle man (he's 29). My second pregnancy was difficult - had morning sickness for 4 months; every time I'd raise my head off the pillow to take care of my 1 year old, I'd vomit or get diarrhea. But I had an easy labor with him - 12 hours but only the last two hours needed LaMaze breathing. I started labor at 5PM on Labor Day with both boys and both were 8 lbs 14 oz.

Genetics? I think I didn't get the right ones. My mom and sis went through menopause at age 48 with no problems, no hot flashes, just had a couple heavy periods and then were done except osteoporisis set in quickly. But I got the good genetics, too - both of them and my niece have had several tumors and cysts removed from their breasts and I've never had those.
