A Compassionate Christ

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them. Matthew 9:36

In his book "Lion and Lamb," Brennan Manning writes:

What the Lord showed me at the Cenacle was this: before I am asked to show compassion toward my brothers and sisters in their suffering. He asks me to accept His compassion in my own life, to be transformed by it, to become caring and compassionate toward myself in my own suffering and sinfulness.....When I am most unhappy with myself, I am most critical of others. When I am most into self-condemnation, I am most judgmental of others.

.....On the way home from the retreat I was riding the ferry from town to the West Bank when I saw an extremely fat and homely woman in her mid-twenties who had probably never once in her life experienced a look of admiration or interest from a man. I wanted to become her, to walk in her obesity, and taste her feelings of rejection. I wanted her to see the look of tenderness Jesus gives her simply because she counts for nothing, because she is ignored and rejected by people who attach such importance to physical beauty. I wanted her to accept the love of Jesus Christ and be so filled with joy that all the human neglect and contempt could not rob her of her dignity.

Today experience Christ's deeply felt compassion for you. Then pass it on with joy to someone who may be a victim of neglect and contempt.

Food for Thought

Receive compassion; spread compassion.

A Prayer For Power

Dear God, how wonderful it is to know that You not only forgive my sins but You feel compassion for me in my failures! You identify with me, You hurt when I hurt, and You long to help. Over and over again I read in Your Word that You were "filled with compassion" for people. You ached for them; You ached to heal them, lead them, love them. And when You see me---wandering, spiritually lost, hungry for something I can't name---You are filled with compassion for me. Help me to receive it, Lord. Help me to empty myself of my own judgment and to humbly accept Your loving gaze on me and Your compassionate touch, which reaches into the core of my soul. Fill me to overflowing with this compassion, so much so that I feel and express only compassion toward every person I meet. Amen.
