A Refreshing Idea

He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. Proverbs 11:25

Sometimes when we're focused on changing habits, it's easy to get wrapped up in our own concerns and begin to isolate ourselves from others. As we strive and labor over our bodies and disciplines, we grow lonely, discouraged, weary with our efforts.

God says one way to be refreshed is to refresh others. Today imagine what someone could do or say that would really refresh and energize you. Maybe it's just a phone call of encouragement, or maybe it's a generous favor---an offer to baby-sit your kids and give you the afternoon off. Then ask yourself: Is there someone I could refresh in a similar way?

Jesus declared, "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you" (Luke 6:38). God's principles aren't just great sayings; they work!

To refresh someone else doesn't have to take a lot of time or even cost you much. It's the effort and intent of giving itself that refreshes your spirit. Mother Teresa said in A Gift for God, "To show great love for God and our neighbor we need not do great things. It is how much love we put in the doing that makes our offering something beautiful for God."

Food for Thought:

Refresh your spirit by refreshing someone else's.

A Prayer For Power:

Dear God, today I need Your refreshing touch first of all and most of all. As I come to You for a second wind, for an encouraging word, keep me mindful of those around me who could use the same----and could receive it from me. Live through me, Lord. I know that I am only able to refresh others because of the refreshment You give me. Keep me from being so wrapped up in my own worries that I miss the opportunities You bring my way to give. Prompt me, nudge me. Remind me of the many sisters who are struggling just as I am. Who can I refresh today, even though I need refreshment myself? Thank You that Your words are life and Your ways are true and whenever I operate according to Your will and principles, You come through! Jesus, Restorer of my soul, I praise You and thank You. Amen.
