Stoned for Gluttony

And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die; so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear. Deut. 21:20-21

If you've ever doubted that gluttony is one of the major sins, this Scripture should shed some new light on the subject. Apparently, God ranked gluttony with rebellion, stubbornness, and drunkenness. You don't think that's so serious? Well, God certainly did, as the punishment was death by stoning. Thank God that we do not have the same rules or three-fourths of America would be stoned to death. How many times have you overindulged with no thought of anyone noticing because everyone else was doing the same thing? Would you have been so openly overindulgent if you had stood out or received harsh disapproval from those around you? No one is punished by others for gluttony (with the exception of a child by a parent and that is not too severe).

Society throughout the world accepts overeating and compulsive eating as a normal way of life, so is it really a sin? Yes, it is a sin because the Lord has ordained it so. He did not create our bodies to function properly under gluttonous conditions, and He knows that physical as well as spiritual discipline is essential to a mature child of God. If you cannot control your appetite, chances are you can easily lose control of other areas of your life. Think of the effect that gluttony and compulsive eating has had on your life. How physically and spiritually healthy are you? How free have you been? How active? If you've answered truthfully, you know that gluttony and compulsive eating is bad news. If you've given it up, thank God and keep the faith. If you haven't, do it now and trust in God to show you that He has a better way. You'll be healthier and happier for it.

Gracious Father, I know gluttony and compulsive eating are wrong. I give it up to you and ask for your perfect control in my appetite. Thank you that we are not subject to the punishment of the Old Testament, but are under the grace of the blood of Jesus Christ. Forgive me for taking gluttony so lightly when you deem it so serious. I ask this in Jesus' name and I thank you for the protection, strength, and victory in Him.
