From "Devotions for Dieter's," by H. Victor Kane

Anoint Your Head Wash Your Face

But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face.....Matthew 6:17

Religion, at times, produces some strange individuals, and dieting does the same. Imagine the Pharisees on a fast day. Jesus and his friends often met them on the street---men with dirty faces, haggard expressions, bare feet, and ashcovered hair. However much he may have admired the courage it took to look queer, he was amused by the fact that much of it was a pious show---merely an appeal for pity to puff their pride.

In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus called for character that was appealing, not appalling. "When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face." In other words, don't go around looking like a shipwrecked sailor, half-starved and hopeless. Put on a happy face.

Mastery of the food habit does not call for a martyr complex. Just because you're pie-less, don't be pious. You aren't a saint suffering for righteousness but a sinner doing penance---with a smile! Your self-denial is no particular virtue. You had it in the past and now you're paying for it. Be glad you were lucky enough to live through those days of debauchery without dying from a heart attack or a stroke.

THE SINS WE DO BY TWO AND TWO
WE PAY BY ONE AND ONE.

And it is just as true that

THE FAT WE PACK ON POUND BY POUND
COMES OFF JUST OUNCE BY OUNCE.

And above all, don't bore your friends by tedious recitals of your newly acquired asceticism. If you use your mouth and your tongue for sensible eating, not for talking, your eloquence will be welcome and sufficient.

This was a really good post. I was really enjoying the fresh reminders, and then got to the last part......

I lauged and thought -- boy, what a 'capital' reminder . Use my mouth to honor God..not bore people with my diet woes....
