From "Devotions for Dieter's," by H. Victor Kane Whoever Loves Discipline Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid. Proverbs 12:1 Our household recently acquired a four-year-old Chesapeake that had been very well trained by her previous owner. It is a pleasure to exercise her, because she has been taught to "heel." We wouldn't be human if we did not experience a senses of pride in contrasting our situation with that of a woman whose dog takes HER for a walk (more literally, a run!) every morning. You have to smile when this little lady goes tearing by, with that great big collie jerking her along. A well-disciplined dog seems to take pride in good behavior. And the animal is much safer on a busy street than the one that runs and roams at will. The ancient proverb says, "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge." The wise person is the one who controls his habits and brings his appetite to heel. Weight reduction isn't only a matter of pride, though we do find satisfaction in seeing a grotesque figure resume it's normal shape. It was said of a certain woman that "her stomach looked like that of a kangaroo with all her children at home!" The greater and more lasting good is to feel comfortable in your clothes and be able to step along without carrying that ill-concealed burden which slows your pace and shortens your breath. Anyone who loves his dog will feed it properly and make it obey. That's a doggone good rule to apply to ourselves. Put a shorter leash on your appetite and take a longer lease on life! |
