From "Devotions for Dieter's," by H. Victor Kane The Fruit Of The Righteous The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, but lawlessness takes away lives. Proverbs 11:30 That expression "forbidden fruit" goes back to Adam and Eve. Tradition identified it as an apple, though the story does not say so, while others consider it a parable of sex out of bounds. Whatever the item may have been, "forbidden fruit" has nothing to do with today's eating habits, for fruit is the fat person's best friend. There is little doubt that those who have dieted successfully owe much of their victory to fruit. It contains an adequate supply of valuable carbohydrates which the human system requires but provides these in more limited amounts than items such as sugar, cookies, ice cream, etc. Furthermore, fruit is filling and helps a great deal in "taking the edge off" that gnawing feeling. Sugar is 100% carbohydrates, and bread is 50%, while a banana is 22% and an apple only 14%. Unfortunately for some of us, eating habits which we acquired early in life often make us prefer foods which are extremely high in fat, starch,or sugar. A cut of pie is a perfect example. A 3-inch sector will contain approximately 300 calories, with a very high ratio of fat and sugar, while a large apple will add only 100 calories and a low proportion of carbohydrates. Fruit is indeed the food of the righteous, just as health really means "wholeness" and wealth means "well-being." Make this your daily slogan and say it again and again: "Fruit is my best friend.....fruit is my best friend." You will prove yourself healthy, wealthy, and wise. |
