From "Slim for Him," by Patricia B. Kreml

Whether Full or Hungry

I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: everywhere and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Phillipians 4:12-13

To be out of food, even for a short time, used to be the biggest disaster we could encounter. Now that Jesus is the leader, we need to re-evaluate our feelings. We musts realize that there's nothing we cannot endure if Christ is our strength. We can bear hunger, and we can enjoy food without overdoing it. We are no longer slaves to our appetites.

Paul says he's been hungry and full, and both are the same because Jesus is the true, constant need in his life. As long as that need is met, all others are met in one way or another. We, too, have to accept Jesus as our one important need in life, and when we do, we can rest, knowing our needs are met in Him.

Abundance and lack are equally good for us. If we lack, we learn to depend more heavily on God and grow closer to Him. Also, we learn to appreciate more fully what we do have. When there's abundance, we rejoice and are filled with happiness, and that, too, is good for us. From time to time on our diets, God will cause us to lack some food we enjoy but it is only for our teaching and strengthening. We must learn that earthly things are not of prime importance in our life because they will one day be done away with. It is our spiritual needs that are most important. When we learn to do without and be content, it is then that God can give us abundantly, knowing it will not harm our growth.

Father, after all these years of loving and craving food, I really do need to learn to "take it or leave it." It's a hard lesson for me, but a good one, so teach me as you see fit. I want to be able to say I'm happy and resting in you no matter how much or how little food I have. Thank you, Lord, for the life-changing lesson I know you are willing to give me.

That is exactly how our God works and moves! Praise Him, and remember He always gives us strength for the task at hand as we need it. Take it one day at a time!
