Heavenly Bodies

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. Philippians 3:20-21

Not to be grim, but although you're exercising, eating tofu, and trimming up today, tomorrow you could be dead. And then what will all your efforts have gained you?

Those of us working to improve our physical bodies are prone to forget that our true home is heaven. We sweat and strive to make our earthly bodies more glorious, rather than eagerly awaiting our new heavenly bodies, which won't wrinkle, sag, or rearrange themselves in unseemly ways as time passes.

There's nothing wrong with putting effort into improving our bodies. But what we invest on them in the way of time, energy, and discipline should never outstrip what we invest in eternity. Paul pointed out to young Timothy: "Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next" (1 Tim. 4:8, NLT).

As you seek to harness the power and help of Jesus today, don't lose sight of the bigger picture. Eagerly await His return. "Work out" your spirit, and go about your routines mindful that you are only passing through. You are already the citizen of a better place where your "real" body---a glorious and heavenly one---is waiting for you!

Food for Thought:

Be heavenly minded for your earthly good.

A Prayer For Power:

Dear God, I'm so glad it's true! This body of mine that feels so resistant to change and improvement, which fails me and fights me, is on its way out! It's not my real body but only a temporary home for my spirit, and Yours, to dwell in. I'm eager to make this body the best it can be. But I want to be more eager for the new body You will clothe me with in heaven. In light of this reality, I choose to give as much care and concern to my spiritual growth and health as I do to my efforts at physical fitness. I will fall short, however, without Your help. Fill me to overflowing with your Holy Spirit. Make me mindful of heaven's approach. And let me be of earthly good precisely because I am heavenly minded. Amen.
