Boredom is optional.

For many of us, being obsessed with food and diets was connected to boredom.
Food and diets themselves became boring. Having unstructured time or being
in what we considered a dull situation triggered our compulsive patterns.
Now that we are more aware of options and possibilities, we can become more
interested and less bored.

If we are alert and alive to the reality of the present, we need never be
bored. It's when we close ourselves off from the natural stimulation that
comes from the environment, from others, and from within that we think
there's nothing interesting going on. The fact is, there's plenty going on;
we're just not fully aware of it.

When we find ourselves feeling bored, we should first ascertain that fatigue
or anxiety is not masquerading as lack of interest. If not, then we can give
ourselves permission to think about or do or plan something that sparks our
enthusiasm. This will require paying close attention to our internal cues.
The solution to boredom may be as simple as giving undivided attention to
our own thoughts, feelings, and sensations.
