From "Slim for Him," by Patricia B. Kreml Food that Defiles And the king appointed them a daily provision of the kings' meat, and of the wine which he drank.....But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the kings' meat, nor with the wine which he drank. Daniel 1:5,8 Daniel was a captive of Nebuchadnezzar and was one of the youths chosen for training to become a counselor to the king. Now the king wanted these men to be strong and healthy, so he appointed them the best food from his own kitchen. Who wouldn't jump at a chance like that? Daniel wouldn't! Why? Because he didn't want to defile himself with nonkosher food, food which God said was bad for him. The man in charge of Daniel was afraid to let him eat other food because he was concerned Daniel's health would be affected adversely. But Daniel knew you can't lose with God, and he proved it to this servant of the king. He and his men ate only as God allowed. After ten days they looked healthier than the rest, so they were granted permission to stay on their diet. It would have been so simple for Daniel to cop out by saying, "Well, I'm a prisoner and have to eat what I'm told," Sure, he was probably tempted by the rich food of the king, but he knew he had to request other food rather than defile his body, even if it meant death for refusing the king. How often have you taken the easy way out and eaten what you shouldn't have just because it was placed before you? How many times have you not spoken up, but have silently eaten forbidden food? There is no need to step out of His will by eating the wrong foods. Stand as Daniel did. Don't let anyone make you concerned for your health. Quite the contrary, you've been eating unhealthy foods all your life. Now that you're eating God's way you can't help but have improved health. Father, be with me each time the "dainties of the king" are placed before me. Strengthen me that I might speak up and refuse them, not pridefully, but humbly and with grace. Make an avenue, so I can receive acceptable food and never be forced to eat the wrong food. Make me aware of the fact that, if I eat wrong food, it is by choice, not necessity. I pray and thank you in Jesus' name. |
