From "The Dieter's Prayer Book," by Heather Harpham Kopp Dearly Beloved Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love. Ephesians 5:1-2 When you lose five pounds, do you feel more worthy of love? In "7 Ways to Build a Better You," Sheri Rose Shepherd recalls how losing weight affected her thinking. Everybody said, 'Oh, you look great. You look wonderful....' I thought, YOU KNOW WHAT? WHEN I'M THIN, I DESERVE LOVE. WHEN I'M THIN, I'M ACCEPTED. WHEN I'M FAT,.....I DON'T DESERVE LOVE. WHEN I'M FAT, I NEED TO BE REJECTED." Does this kind of thinking sound familiar? Many health experts believe that one reason women pack on excess weight is to create a safe barrier----in essence, to repel intimacy and refuse to receive the love we feel we don't deserve. As a result of our low self-esteem, we rebuff our husband's sincere sexual advances, or we perceive an encouraging comment from a friend as an insult. The fact is, only when we choose to believe the truth that we are "dearly loved children" can we begin to "live a life of love." Just as we love Christ because He first loved us, it is only by first RECEIVING love that we have love to give others. And get this: Love is our most powerful ally in our battle against self-destructive lifestyle habits! The more we allow ourselves to be loved, the less inclined we are toward self-abusing choices. Today ask God for the courage to believe in the greatest news of all: I AM DEARLY LOVED! Food for Thought: Don't refuse love; USE love. A Prayer For Power: Dear God, because You say it is true, I know it is so: I AM DEARLY BELOVED! I am loved by You through and through, and I am loved by many other people, too. I don't want to push them away! I don't want to think, "I'm not worth loving!" Give me the courage instead to receive love with grace and gratitude. May I always be ready to turn the love I get into love that I give away. And may my growing belief in the fact that I'm loved be one more reason to treat my body with care. Thank You, God, that I am Your dearly loved child! Because this is true, I can live a life of love---received and returned. Amen. |
