From "Devotions for Dieters," by H. Victor Kane

One Believes That He May Eat Anything

One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables.
Romans 14:2

One person who stands, like a proud Colossus, in the path of our would-be dieter, is the thin person who "believes he can eat anything" without gaining weight---and apparently does. And the thing which makes such an individual both irritating and discouraging is the fact that he sometimes attributes this to a special virtue on his part, such as his labor habits, "You see," he says with a patronizing air, "I work off my food."

About this time our fatso friend wants either to destroy his tormenter or to take up arms against whatever gods are responsible for his frustrating fate. Neither will do any good; you just have to put up with people like that and with yourself. What if it does cost you a bit more effort to win the mastery over your consumptions and your contours? All the more credit to you and a greater satisfaction for doing it.

The person who can eat anything is probably conditioned to his pattern of eating by habits that go way back to his childhood. Although for a time he can enjoy the things forbidden to you, he probably does not desire them every day as you do. There is a chance that his indulgence may catch up with him in the future, when he does begin to put on the pounds.

The fact that you are now denied these goodies makes you want them all the more and all the oftener, while yon Cassius friend with the "lean and hungry look" will eat less tomorrow without his even being aware of it. He will be eating salad and fruit while you go right on with your roast pork and dressing.

Keep on keeping on! In all likelihood the time will come when you, too, can eat anything one day and compensate for it the next. Your battle is not with anyone but yourself. Talk to yourself in words like these:

MY LIFE IS A HOUSE I BUILD FOR ME----MYSELF THE ARCHITECT SHALL BE.
