We're hosting a party at our house this weekend (Saturday night). So I chose a really bad time to get back on track! It's going to be a challenge for me to stick with Phase 1 foods, which means: No alcohol No sugar No fruit No bread, potatoes, rice, chips, or carbs of any kind No food high in fat So I've planned the following so far: We're having a braai, which is sort of a South African version of a barbeque except we use open fire instead of gas or charcoal grills. So while the food is cooking, I'll put out some snacks, including things I can't have like chips (I'll pick a flavour I don't like!) but also including some veggie crudites with a fat-free cottage cheese dip. For the braai we're having chicken marinated in a tomato-based sauce. The sauce gets ketchup in it, but I'm going to replace the ketcup with tomato puree and just add some artificial sweetener. We might also add some sausages but I won't have any of the sausage. For side dishes I'll make a large green salad that I can eat, and maybe some oven-roasted veggies - except no carrots, no butternut and no corn since I can't have those. So I'll stick with peppers, onions and mushrooms for the veggies. I'll also do a couscous dish (fry some onion, babymarrows, garlic and peppers in a little olive oil and mix it with the cooked couscous, delicious!) but I can't have couscous. So all of that is fine so far. But the dessert is killing me. I don't have access to Splenda (yet - thanks CE :wish: ) so I only have artificial sweetners with horrible aftertaste. I can use fat-free artificially sweetened yoghurt, I can't use fruit, I can use low-fat or fat-free cheese (ricotta, cream cheese, cottage cheese etc.), I can use eggs, 1% milk and nuts. I've thought about making some kind of baked custard using artificial sweetener? This is really an issue for me, because our friends all know and expect that I'll make a great dessert - it's one of my hobbies. So I don't want to make them something that tastes like diet food! And obviously I can't use anything with biscuits or flour. If I don't find a recipe, what I'll do is bake a bunch of cupcakes and put them in the middle of the table on a platter. Then it won't be so noticeable that I'm not having dessert. I've decided this time round I'm not going to tell anybody except my parents that I'm on this diet - first because almost none of my friends have ever needed to diet and so they simply can't give support; I found that last time. "Come on Linda, one little cupcake won't ruin your diet!" Well actually it will, while I'm on phase 1! So I need to try and do this while not letting on that I'm dieting... sigh. And the second reason I'm not telling anybody is that there will be times when I decide to have a calculated "cheat" - when I decide I will have dessert, or a little bit of bread or whatever, and I don't want to feel guilty if I do so in front of our friends. It's enough to be accountable here and to Hanno. Hanno is waiting until after the party before he's joining me on the Beach, but I decided if I'm going to wait with the diet until we're not having dinner parties, I'll never be thin! So it's just a challenge. Anyway, any ideas for recipes for dessert? |

Hi Linda! Check out www.lowcarbfriends.com's recipe room. They have some great desserts. Actually they have great recipes period! Aren't there any dessert recipes in the SBD book? I have a couple of LC cookbooks if you want some suggestions. Just let me know what kind you're looking for. Lenise |

Thank you! I'll check that out for sure. I have a friend who has been doing the SBD for a few months now and she told me last night about a really good dessert - a lemon souffle that uses artificial sweetener and is apparently divine. So I'm going to try that. But I'm definitely up for as many good recipes as I can get, so thank you very much! If the recipe is as good as she said I'll post it here. :eat: |
