"Inner Harvest"
Hazelden Meditation Series

Life is too short for perfectionism.

Perhaps if we had an infinite amount of time on this earth, we could
eventually learn how to be perfect. But because we have a limited life span,
it is more realistic to accept our imperfections and enjoy ourselves in
spite of them.

Perfectionism was part of the problem many of us had with food. We thought
we had to be the best, the brightest, the most popular, the thinnest. We
used food as consolation for not meeting the impossibly high expectations
others had for us or we had for ourselves.

We can do ourselves a huge favor, and those we love a huge favor, by letting
go of unrealistic expectations. Our program promotes the development of
humility and acceptance. It teaches us that we can like and respect
ourselves and others even though neither we nor they are perfect.
Self-esteem and perfectionism are mutually exclusive. Here's to self-esteem!

I will not waste this precious day by trying to be perfect.
