When A Hungry Man Dreams

As when a hungry man dreams he is eating and awakes with his hunger not satisfied, or as when a thirsty man dreams he is drinking and awakes faint, with his thirst not quenched, so shall the multitude of all nations be that fight against Mount Zion. Isaiah 29:8

Occasionally one finds a verse in the Bible which indicates the author was a human being and even a fellow sufferer. Reading this verse, do you suppose that Isaiah had been on a diet? He likened the delusions of the oppressor nations to those of a hungry man who dreams that he is eating and awakes with his hunger not satisfied.

If you are really beginning to pass up those rich desserts, you will know what it is to dream that you are enjoying the thing your restricted system craves. If your favorite dream is to "dwell in marble halls," you are probably in the dining room at dinnertime. And if you also dream "of Jeanie with the light brown hair," it is probably that cute little wife of yours coming from the kitchen with a luscious slab of chocolate cake! All this may happen at first, but don't despair. Things will change.

Maybe you'll have a dream like mine the other night. In a way it was a nightmare, because I seemed to be eating a piece of warm apple pie. I was fighting off the temptation like mad but giving in despite myself. Conscience was taking over in the subconscious. What a relief to wake up and find it wasn't true!

It isn't a good idea to go to bed hungry. That nasty gnawing which nudges you to get up and nibble doesn't bring on sleep any better than a pair of cold feet. Dieters overcome their bedtime hunger in a number of ways, such as a cracker or a half-slice of bread with warm skim milk or a spot of tea. Some save their dessert (low calorie or a very small portion) from supper and make it their bedtime treat.

Dream of eating you probably will, but just be glad that you have gotten smart enough not to overeat when you're awake.
