Marvelous Melons The next time you're in search of a healthy, flavorful, satisfying snack, think melons - as in cantaloupes! Melons are full of nutrients and won't put you over your calorie limit. The cantaloupe, a small round melon, is refreshing, filling and a great source of key nutrients. In fact, of all melons, cantaloupes contain the largest amount of beta-carotene. Beta-carotene acts as an antioxidant in the body and may help reduce the risk of some cancers. Cantaloupe is also a good source of potassium and vitamins A and C. As mentioned, cantaloupe is a caloric benefit to your diet. You can eat enough to feel quite full without having to consume a large number of calories. The secret of the cantaloupe is the amount of water it contains. Cantaloupes have a high water content that contributes to their volume or bulk, so they are a good source of fluids, too. Tidbit The melons grown and consumed in the United States are actually muskmelons. True cantaloupes come from Europe and have a distinct warty surface. Nonetheless, the khaki-colored melons with the netted rind that we refer to as cantaloupes are the most popular of American melons. So, when you're looking for a satisfying, nutrient-dense snack or dessert or side dish that will leave you with calories to spare slice into a fresh cantaloupe. A delicious dessert: Pair your cantaloupe with frozen yogurt. Copyright © BellyBytes.com. All rights reserved. |

I just found this post, and wanted to add that both cantalope and honeydew melons are a natural diuretic. If you are bloated from too much salt intake, eating both cantelope and honeydew will help your body get rid of the excess water. I can speak from experience that this works.... |

Just found this: A Healthy Thistle that Gets Rid of Excess Water by Victoria The artichoke has been known for ages as having a diuretic effect because it stimulates bile and urine. A study by a Japanese researcher in 1940 found that the artichoke lowered cholesterol a bit and acted like a diuretic. Swiss investigators also found that the cholesterol in humans dropped after eating an artichoke. Other studies done on the artichoke by US and Russian scientists also noted a drop in blood cholesterol as well as the artichoke having anti inflammatory activity in dogs. French scientists were very successful in using artichoke extract for treating kidney and liver aliments and have taken out a patent on it. Next time you feel bloated, swollen, or find that you need to lower your cholesterol, eat an artichoke or two! |
