Indian Orange Chicken Stew

This recipe can be made either in a slow cooker or conventional oven. You can adjust spices and ingredients to what you like. I used an Indian spice called Garam Masala, but you can substitute whatever you have on hand such as any combination of cloves, cumin, coriander, cardamom, curry powder, etc.


1 2 oz can tomato paste
1 10 oz can cream of chicken soup
1 cup orange juice
2 cups chicken broth
2-3 tablespoons Garam Masala. See description here: Garam Masala
Salt and pepper to taste
Fresh garlic to taste - roughly chopped (I used the whole head)
2 onions peeled, quartered and sliced thinly
1 green pepper seeded and sliced thinly
1 turnip peeled and sliced into small pieces
8 potatoes sliced into about 1 inch pieces pieces, peeling optional
1 bag (8-10 pieces) of frozen boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs that has been thawed for 2 days in fridge.
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons butter (optional)


Place all ingredients except chicken in slow cooker or large roasting pan and mix together well. Brown chicken in skillet in olive oil and/or butter and place in slow cooker or roasting pan.

If using slow cooker, cover and cook on high 3-4 hours. If using oven, place covered roasting pan in a 400 degree oven and bake for 1.5 hours. In either method, make sure chicken is cooked through and all vegetables are tender.

Looks interesting Dave! I've still never had turnip .... did have that garam masala for the first time I know of the other day though and that was nice :)
