With two good ankles, Plaxico Burress presents healthy forecast BY RALPH VACCHIANO DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Sunday, August 31st 2008, 8:30 PM Kostroun/AP Plaxico Burress says he is finally healthy. Plaxico Burress played at a near-Pro Bowl level last season on one good ankle. Now he's finally ready to see what he can do on two. The 31-year-old receiver, who has been bothered by a right ankle injury all summer, went through his third straight full practice with the Giants Sunday and, for the first time, said he went full-speed. As a result, he declared himself 100% healthy. He hasn't been able to say that in more than a year. "Nobody's more excited than me," Burress said. "I'm back out there doing some of the things I wasn't able to do over the past year or so. I'm getting my feet back under me and getting into game shape." A year ago, while being unable to practice almost the entire year, Burress still had 70 catches for 1,025 yards and 12 touchdowns. "I expect to be a lot better than I was last year," he said. "There's always room for improvement," Burress added. "Last year I played well in some games and had some good games, but I just didn't do it on a consistent basis like I wanted to. When I was out there I gave what I had. But this year I expect to be consistent. I expect to be great week in and week out." Burress did say he felt "a little winded, a little tired" after practice, and, "I'm just waiting to get my legs back under me." Tom Coughlin indicated Domenik Hixon will be ready to fill in a little in the opener on Thursday night as Burress rounds into shape. But Burress expects that to happen quickly, because he doesn't want defensive backs sticking as close to him as they did last year. "I hate getting covered," he said. "It's embarrassing to get covered. The more effective I can be, the more explosive our offense can be. It's going to be exciting." |
