August 31, 2008 Source: McDougle signs with Big Blue Defensive end Jerome McDougle, who was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday, has signed a one-year deal with the Giants, according to an NFL source. McDougle drove up the Turnpike from Philly almost as soon as he was cut yesterday and entered into negotiations with the Giants. He worked out for them today, apparently passed his physical, and then signed with the team. Terms of the deal weren’t immediately available, but it’s believed to be worth about $1 million. His arrival gives the Giants 54 men on their roster, which means someone else has to be cut. Hopefully we’ll find out in a few minutes when Tom Coughlin begins his press conference. |

Who knows, could get something out of him like the Titans got out of Vandenbosh (sp) after being stuck out in Arizona for so long. If not, depth is depth! |

Waiting to see who will be released to get back down to 53. I'd have to say Droughns or Rodney Leisle. |

They cut Leisle. UPDATE: Coughlin just made it official, the Giants have signed DE Jerome McDougle. To make room for him, they cut DT Rodney Leisle. “And I felt badly about that,” Coughlin said. “But we felt like this was a move we had to do.” On McDougle, Coughlin said “He’s had a good preseason. He played well the other night against New England’s (starters) … He can fit in the rotation and be a part of any third-down package or second-and-long package we have. We’re constantly trying to upgrade. Obviously in this situation some attention had to be spent on the defensive end spot. We think this is going to be a real good investment for us.” |

McDougle had a strong preseason for the Eagles. I'm disappointed they cut him. |

From Philly: McDougle could fit with the Giants By REUBEN FRANK phillyBurbs.com He's got his old No. 95 jersey back. He's got one of his old coaches from the Eagles back, in defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. And he's even got his old division back. “It is great,” Jerome McDougle said yesterday after signing a one-year deal with the Giants. “Defending Super Bowl champs. I look good in blue. I feel good to be here, staying in the division, so it's not really much of a difference as far as guys you are going against. “I just feel good to be here, to be wanted, and I'm just looking forward to doing some good things on this defense. I like the defensive scheme, it's sort of the same kinds of things that I came from — a lot of movement — and we get after it.” The Giants, having lost Michael Strahan to retirement and Osi Umenyiora for the year with a knee injury, were desperate for defensive end help. And even McDougle, with just three sacks in 33 career games, was attractive to them. “He's had a good preseason,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. “He has practiced, he hasn't missed any time, he played well the other night against New England's ones, and we just felt like when we evaluated those that were released that he certainly was a guy that created great interest for us and can help us.” The Giants, who beat the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII in February, open the season in just three days against the Redskins. “We think that this is going to be a real good investment for us,” Coughlin said. “He can fit in a rotation and can be a part of any third-down package or second-and-long package that we have. He gives us some flexibility and versatility with a player. We are constantly trying to upgrade.” McDougle had 21/2 sacks for the Eagles this the preseason, including 11/2 against the Jets on Thursday, two days before the Eagles released him. “I knew it was a kind of 50-50 chance,” McDougle said. “I wasn't really worried about it. I knew either way it went I was going to be somewhere. That's part of the game, that's the kind of league we're in, so they moved on and I moved on, and I am just going to make the best out of it.” McDougle was the 15th pick in the 2003 draft but missed half the 2003 season, part of the 2004 season and the entire 2005 and 2007 seasons with injuries. “Obviously it is going to be a different atmosphere for me, so I need to kind of get the terminology and get everything down,” McDougle said. “Football is football when it comes down to it so I am just looking forward to getting out here and mixing it up a little bit, just getting with my teammates. Kind of learn everybody, learn how I play, learn how everybody else plays, and start winning some games.” ....Blah blah blah... a bunch of Eagles notes.... |
