Noted surgeon says Osi could return by October BY TOM ROCK | tom.rock@newsday.com August 25, 2008 Osi Umenyiora can expect a four-month recovery period after tomorrow's surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee. But according to one orthopedist, the Giants could have had him back on the field by October. What's more, he speculated they still might have that chance. Craig Levitz, a Rockville Centre-based surgeon who is a physician for the PGA Tour and member of the MLB panel of physicians, said if Giants doctors had decided to remove the meniscus rather than try to repair it tomorrow, Umenyiora could have been playing in three to four weeks. The bad side of that is removing the cartilage could endanger Umenyiora's long-term health, leaving less to absorb the shocks of playing in the NFL and leading to arthritis. "If it's repairable, they did the right thing for the player at the expense of the season," he said. "If you're a player, you want it repaired. As long as it heals, it will be as good as new." Levitz added that more than half the time surgeons begin a procedure expecting to repair a meniscus based on an MRI find it non-repairable. In those cases, they remove part of the meniscus and the recovery period is about a month. In other words, unless there are other issues such as ligament damage - Levitz has no firsthand knowlege of his condition - Umenyiora has a better than a 50-percent chance of being able to play within four weeks. "If they don't repair it, there is no reason he should miss more than a month," Levitz said. Levitz said that meniscus repairs have only a 75-percent success rate and if the meniscus does not heal properly, it might have to be removed, anyway, with a second procedure. Tom Coughlin was told of team physician Russell Warren's recommendation yesterday. "After listening to the explanation and Dr. Warren's thoughts on it," Coughlin said, "I am convinced that this is the right procedure, the right way to go." |

This is the right thing to do.Repairing it is the half assed method, and Osi will end up with bone on bone in 2 years. This is how Ron Dixon's career ended, they did the quickie repair thing,he played on it,it never healed properly, and he ended up with bone on bone. |

I think repairing it is the right move. Removing the cartilage altogether will result in bone-on-bone like Curtis Martin had. I'd rather Osi sit out the season, get healthy, & be ready to go for a while instead of removing it & basically shortening his career. I hate when these "experts" weigh in knowing NOTHING about the injury at all! Dude hasn't seen the MRI results or anything.... he's making a blind diagnosis, I wouldn't follow his "diagnosis" or "treatment" statements. |

The future is more important then this year. Do you want the organization to rush Osi back risking further damage or scrap this entire season and have Osi back 100% healthy for hopefully the next ten years? |
