The Giants wasted no time determining their best course of action when confronted with an unwanted decision: Who replaces right defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who is out for the season with a torn cartilage in his left knee? Mathias Kiwanuka, a natural pass-rushing defensive end converted last season strong side linebacker, will be moved back to end, The Post has learned. Expect to see Kiwanuka on the field today at end when practice is held this afternoon at Giants Stadium. It's doubtful the team would make such a drastic move if there was any chance of Michael Strahan coming out of retirement. It's a move that makes complete sense. The Giants used the 32nd and last pick in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft to select Kiwanuka, who holds the career sack record at Boston College. The team fully expected to use Kiwanuka at end in a rotation with Umenyiora, Strahan and Justin Tuck. With the emergence of Tuck and the return of Strahan, there was no room for Kiwanuka in the rotation and so last season the decision was made to move Kiwanuka to strong side linebacker, as the coaching staff was adamant about getting their best athletes into the starting lineup. After a rough transition, Kiwanuka gradually picked up the intricacies of playing linebacker, working hard on his pass drops. After starting the first 10 games, his season ended Nov. 18 in Detroit when he broke his leg and suffered ankle damage. He lined up at strong side linebacker this spring and summer but now will make the move back to the line, to the position he's most comfortable playing. Who plays strong side linebacker? The Giants have a few options. The most likely scenario is moving veteran free agent acquisition Danny Clark into the strong side spot, allowing Gerris Wilkinson to start on the weak side. Clark and Wilkinson have been waging a battle for the starting weak side spot. Also available at strong side linebacker are Zak DeOssie, and Tank Daniels and possibly Chase Blackburn, the backup middle linebacker. Click here, motherclickers... It was inevitable IMO. He's their best option at the position if Strahan can't be lured out of retirement |

I guess in the long run that is the best decision to make. The Giants D is a monster largely due to the ferocious pass rush the front four is capable of putting on. Hence replacing Umenyiora with someone who could not keep up the pressure on the QB is only going to put more pressure on the back 7........... As someone mentioned on another board (my apologies because I can't recall who said it or where) right now our starting LB's of Pierce, Clark, and Wilkinson is just as good (if not better) as Pierce, Mitchell, and Torbor.............. I would also tend to think that with the 1st round of cuts on the horizon the organization will have an easier time finding a servicable replacement to add depth at LB than DE.......... |

This was the best decision for the team but I hope that our current linebackers step up and play well during this transition. Do the Giants leave him at DE even next year or will we see him converted again? |

Yes I am in full panic mode while checking the waiver wire.......... From ESPN.com: POPE SURPRISE VIKINGS CUT (1:59 p.m. ET) The Minnesota Vikings' most notable roster move Monday was releasing veteran linebacker Derrick Pope. To this point, it had appeared Pope would be the top backup at all three linebacker positions. Cyber........your thoughts? |

Meh.........I like our back up LBs better than Pope, latteral move, pointless. Again,I inquire about Simeon Rice for depth and rotational pass rush. We still have DeOssie,Blackburn, and Kehl as well. |

It seems that the Giants and Strahan could be serious on his return but I think he should stay retired and not pull a Favre. |

He won't really be pulling a Favre if he plays this year. Favre unretired because he can't let go. Strahan will be unretiring to help out his team, not because he can't let go. Big difference. |

What is "overpaying"? It's a one year contract, it should have no effect on next year's cap, unless I'm seeing it wrong. So why the concern? I could care less if we gave him $15mil. If we have the money, it's not going to affect the current roster since we're all set, nor weaken other positions due to the money....then I have absolutely no problem with paying whatever we deem 'fair value' in our current situation. I think we can win without him, don't get me wrong...but I don't see any major cap ramifications so I personally couldn't give a rat's ass about the money. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong re: cap. |

Well, they could Start Tuck and Stra at the end position and still use Kiwi in the rotation (good DL rotation sure worked last year) and still Start Clark and Wilkinson (sp?) at R/L OLB. Maybe just sign some decent depth at OLB. Again, no one can replace Osi, but they can certainly cushion the blow of his loss this year. Thoughts? |

But you ARE less likely to get a virus. ;) I only mention that because my expensive Dell got wiped out two weeks ago. Sorry for the mini-jacking. |

;) I do like it though to be honest. I got the MacBook Pro. It's pretty sweet, but some things still frustrate the hell out of me. |
