Bradshaw ends silence about time in jail

Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw ended his silence a few minutes ago and spoke to the media for the first time about his recent 28-day stint in a Virginia jail, and the 30-day stint he still has to serve after the season.

He spoke calmly and politely for nearly six minutes before a team official ended the session. He did not specifically detail why he landed in jail, but he said that it was related to both an underage drinking incident at the University of Virginia and a petit larceny conviction while he was at Marshall. Both may have been a violation of juvenile probation, the records of which remain sealed.

Bradshaw also did not explain why Tom Coughlin said he was unaware that Bradshaw was due to serve another 30 days in jail at the end of the NFL season, though he insisted “He knows now.”

Here, so you can judge it for yourself, is the transcript of his brief session with reporters:

Q: After all you went through this offseason, is it just a relief to be back playing football?

Bradshaw: Oh yeah, man. It’s a very big relief just to be a part of this team, man, and to come out here and have fun, get along and have fun with my teammates.

Q: Is it difficult to go from Super Bowl to White House, to ring (ceremony), to doing 30 days in jail? How did you do that?

Bradshaw: It’s life, man. It’s just what I did. That’s how I looked at it. I was there for a reason and I just had to learn from.

Q: Is there anything you can clarify about why you served 30 days?

Bradshaw: It’s a juvenile offense, something that happened years ago. I just had to serve those 30 days, you know, just because I made that mistake.

Q: Was it from the original offense, because they just said it was a probation violation?

Bradshaw: It just kept going on with the situations I had in college. That just kept it going.

Q: You mean the thing that happened in Marshall, the video game thing?

Bradshaw: Yes.

Q: And the alcohol thing, too?

Bradshaw: Yes.

Q: Which one of those?

Bradshaw: Both of them.

Q: They were the reasons …

Bradshaw: Both of them were the reasons that kept this thing going since I was 15.

Q: Why did it take so long? Do you know?

Bradshaw: No.

Q: Do you have to do another 30 days?

Bradshaw: That’s coming up. I plan to do whatever I have to do, just to get through this.

Q: Is it over after that?

Bradshaw: Yes, after the last 30 days, it will be. Nothing behind me, nothing on the record.

Q: Is it frustrating, because people assume you must have done something else to go to jail, yet you haven’t done anything new since you were drafted?

Bradshaw: Right. Nothing’s been done since I’ve been drafted with the Giants. There’s no question about that. It should be over with after these 30 days. All this comes from a juvenile offense.

Q: But has it been frustrating for you, because people are making assumptions?

Bradshaw: Of course. I mean, that’s just inaccurate assumptions.

Q: How has the organization treated you?

Bradshaw: They’ve treated me great. They have nothing against me. I plan to do what I did last year, and just come out and play my game.

Q: When they told you that you owed 60 days, were you surprised? Did the Virginia attorneys just forget it back in 2006?

Bradshaw: No. I went to court about it and that’s just what was said, and I handled it how I had to handle it.

Q: It was that they forgot to sentence you in 2006?

Bradshaw: No, nothing about that. Like I said, it just kept getting pushed back because of the offenses in college.

Q: When did you find out that you had to go to jail?

Bradshaw: Like, April.

Q: So it was after the Super Bowl?

Bradshaw: Yes.

Q: Everyone assumed that the publicity you got in the Super Bowl … (inaudible) … was that the case?

Bradshaw: No, it really doesn’t matter who you are. Everything gets put in the papers. It doesn’t matter if you’re Gene from the Giants Zone, or whoever. Regardless of whether you go to the Super Bowl or not, you’ve got to learn from your mistakes and get punished for them.

Q: The sealing of the records and your lawyers not letting you talk added to the mystery and let people speculate about what you did. Was there a part of you that wanted to step up and say “Enough. Let me tell you what happened …”?

Bradshaw: No, like I said, it goes back to when I was a juvenile. When I was young I made a mistake. The records are sealed regardless.

Q: Was it a shock to know you had to serve time in jail when this happened such a long time ago?

Bradshaw: He just asked the same thing, man. Like I said, no one wants to go to jail. Like I said, you learn from your mistakes and you get punished for them. I did what I had to do just to get through this.

Q: Tom Coughlin said he was not aware you had 30 more days to serve. Did you tell him and the organization?

Bradshaw: They know now.

Q: They know now?

Bradshaw: Yeah.

Q: How come you didn’t tell them before?

Bradshaw: Just because I was learning the same thing at the same time.

Q: So you didn’t know? When did you find out (about the 30 days you owe next season)?

Bradshaw: In April.

Q: Tom said just a couple of days ago that he didn’t know about the second 30 days.

Bradshaw: Well, he knows now.

Q: Is it hard to get this out of your mind when you’re on the football field.

Bradshaw: Of course. It’s always in the back of your head. With me, when I’m in the field I’m in another mind statement. I just go out to play my game.

Q: How do you think you’re putting it out of your mind in practice?

Bradshaw: Just being here, man. It’s a relief to be here and just to be around all these guys and just to be a part of this team.

Q: Do you think this will follow you, or will there come a day where you are ‘Ahmad Bradshaw, football player’?

Bradshaw: That’s the way I’m trying to make it, just to come out here and try to make a name for myself and just play my role. I think everything happens for a reason.

I just want to say something here,as all of you know I'm the father of three grown girls ......kids do stuff like this .I'm not saying all kids are bad.....so please don't jump me but the kid was 15....you can not show me a teenager that has not tried a drink ....or something at 15.Now I'm not saying "all" kids do this all the time.Let the parents take some of the blame and responsability.I knew when my kids tried ..stuff...and I punished them but while I was doing that I was also remembering that I had done it myself as a kid.I admit that I don't know personally alot about this case but 30(or60) days seems a bit excessive for the crimes.Glade it's over.
