Ahmad Bradshaw could be headed back to jail.

According to a story today in the Bristol Herald-Courier (and thanks to ProFootballTalk.com, for pointing this story out), Bradshaw’s recent 30-day stint in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon, Va., was actually only the first of two 30-day terms he’s scheduled to serve. The second, according to the report, will be served next offseason.

The story is fascinating and digs a little deeper into the mystery surrounding Bradshaw’s jail term, which has never fully been explained. According to his lawyer, the Giants’ running back was jailed due to a violation of a probation from an incident that occurred when he was a juvenile. And both the lawyer and the Giants insist that the incident occurred before he was drafted by his current team.

Virginia authorities have been uncooperative with the media, and Bradshaw has refused to speak to the press since camp opened. The NFL, meanwhile, is investigating the incident and has not ruled out the possibility that Bradshaw could be suspended for violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy.

According to various sources, the reason for the mystery is that authorities in Virginia screwed up. The sources insist that the incident that triggered the probation was the infamous incident in 2006 when Bradshaw, then at Marshall, stole a PlayStation from a teammate. Apparently when he was convicted, the state overlooked the fact that the crime was a violation of a previous probation.

Apparently sometime during the Super Bowl run, when Bradshaw’s story was told over and over again in the press, someone realized the oversight and informed authorities. Then a deal was struck for Bradshaw to serve the time he should’ve served in 2006.

No one has confirmed that theory on the record, though - possibly because it wouldn’t reflect well on the state of Virginia. However, authorities in that state have bigger problems now, because the report in the Herald-Courier is less about Bradshaw’s extra jail time and more about the alleged special treatment he received in prison.

Apparently, Bradshaw’s lawyer and Virginia officials are currently having discussions (or possibly hearings) about how this whole situation was handled/bungled. Bradshaw, expecting a resolution of all that soon, might speak to the media about the whole affair early next week.

The Giants had no comment on the Herald-Courier report.
