Amani Toomer was back on the field this morning, apparently over the swelling in his leg that sidelined him yesterday. But Steve Smith remains sidelined with a sore groin. Asked when Smith might return, Coughlin said, “I don’t know about that one. It’s day-to-day, practice-to-practice.” Also missing yesterday was offensive lineman Adam Koets, who wasn’t even out on the field. He was held out yesterday after he woke up feeling dizzy. Coughlin said he hasn’t been cleared to resume workouts yet, but he seemed hopeful he’d have him back this afternoon. Meanwhile, here are a few highlights from this morning’s practice: • FB Madison Hedgecock didn’t fall, and yes that appears to be newsworthy. He took a flare pass from Eli Manning and stayed on his feet - something he didn’t do yesterday when he carried the ball up the middle and tripped over his own two feet. • He might have a tough time making anything but the practice squad, but keep your eye on rookie DE Wallace Gilberry, who burned left tackle Guy Whimper in one drill and would’ve hammered QB Anthony Wright if he had been allowed. Earlier, he snuffed out an end-around by WR Sinorice Moss. Actually, as the shifty Moss ran toward him, he may have put a move on Gilberry. But Moss fell. • Throw the red flag. CB Kevin Dockery made a leaping, falling apparent interception of a Wright pass that was intended for Moss. He made the catch and fell flat on his back, which is when the ball popped up and out. Did he have control? Did the ground cause the fumble? Hard to tell from across the field. We’ll have to wait for the TV replay. • Throw the red flag again. Manning made a rainbow throw to the end zone from 20 yards out that Toomer might have caught. He shed his coverage by Corey Webster, dove and claimed he made the catch on the ground. The coach on the sideline signaled catch, though CB R.W. McQuarters thought otherwise. • I’m telling you, Kenny Phillips is going to hurt someone. I watched QB David Carr throw a nice pass down field in the direction of WR Mario Manningham. The receiver seemed open and I thought he was going to catch it and then - boom! - out of nowhere Phillips came charging in. He nearly made the interception and nearly took Manningham’s head off, all at the same time. He’s got to be in the receivers’ heads by now. I know he’s in my head. Every time I feel something moving behind me I quickly look to find out where the rookie safety is. • Another player to watch: WR Brandon London. He’s likely headed to another year on the practice squad, but he’s big, has shown some decent speed and is catching a lot of passes - including a sliding catch in the end zone on a soft toss from QB Andre Woodson. London got a few first-team reps today, too. • Great play by LB Danny Clark to break up a flare pass intended for RB Brandon Jacobs. He reached around the big running back and knocked it away. A few plays later he shed his block from G Chris Snee, jumped, and swatted down an Eli Manning pass. • Carr continues to look jittery and Coughlin said he flushed himself out of the pocket a little bit early this morning on at least two occasions. However, I did see one play when he didn’t flush out, but sidestepped the rush and then tossed a quick, off-balance throw over the middle to WR D.J. Hall, who made a nice catch. |

Kevin dockery had the ball. The ground caused the fumble Toomers TD catch would have stayed whatever the call was. He looked to have his hands underneath but not enough to keep part of the ball from touching the ground. Brandon London is quickly becoming a go to guy in camp. Swatted down an Eli pass?? Yeah because Eli threw it too low. It was basically the same pass the he broke up intended for Jacobs. Hardly worth mentioning and not as standout as the broken up pass to Jacobs.. The only reason Phillips was even close to Manningham is because Manningham was playing a little gingerly this morning. I noticed he had his quad taped. Phillips is good but coming out of nowhere? Im not so sure about that ... |

And for the PM if no one has posted it yet... ( my comments are between the ( ) marks ) JULY 30, 2008 - Steve Smith did not return to practice as Coach Coughlin had originally hoped. Smith will be reevaluated tomorrow morning and hopefully can return to the field for tomorrow’s practice. - WR Mario Manningham and DE Justin Tuck both sat out this evening’s practice as well. Manningham is still suffering from a sore quad while Tuck was experiencing soreness. Both injuries are not serious and both are expected back tomorrow. - Domenik Hixon’s name is becoming a daily fixture in the day’s recap as he yet again took advantage of his first team reps. Hixon made two phenomenal catches in the defensive back/wide receiver drills reeling in two touchdown receptions over Aaron Ross. What stood out was Hixon’s ability to make the big play despite fantastic coverage by Ross. ( Hixon did look very good this evening. He's definitely getting some attention ) - D.J. Hall continued his fine play as well with several nice catches throughout the night including a touchdown pass from Eli Manning. ( Another one to keep an eye on. A possible practice squader ) - R.W. McQuarters was able to intercept David Carr by jumping the route for the first of two interceptions by the defense on the evening. ( This one was over Jennings. McQ jammed him early at the line and just beat him to the ball. Great coverage and pick ) - Danny Clark did not practice in the night session. Clark is currently practicing once a day. Chase Blackburn took Clark’s spot on the defense during drills. - Sam Madison practiced this evening. He did not practice this morning. He too is still practicing once a day. - Brandon London, as like Hixon, continued to open eyes. London made a catch, after some fantastic route running and a bullet from Anthony Wright, then took off up field. London again made an excellent grab up the deep down the right sidelines leaping over Terrell Thomas. London proceeded to make a nice move after coming down with the catch and sprinted down the field. ( This guy is fun to watch. He's fairly tall and very quick with real good balance. He's becoming one of the favorite camp players to watch this year ) - The defense was able to strip Derrick Ward during a running play. ( yeah good strip of the ball but me and the boy both were on the side screaming FUMBLE! GET THE BALL! No urgencey to get on the ball from either side. We were disappointed in that ) - Bradshaw had an excellent evening breaking several runs as he blasted through numerous holes opened by the offensive line. One of Bradshaw’s runs drew cheers from David Diehl who began yelling “That a boy Ahmad, that a boy.” ( Bradshaw had better be in there more than ward giving Jacobs a break. Two of his runs were set up with excellent blocking and he made it through without being touched once ) - Sinorice Moss had his best day of camp after a standout evening. Moss made several big plays including 40 yard catch down the right sideline from Andre Woodson. Later, Moss pulled in a catch from Wright up the seam. ( Moss was alright but he and Jennings both are not as consistent as London. If I had to put them in order definitely London over Moss, and definitely Moss over Jennings. Jennings is struggling ) - Speaking of Anthony Wright, in his second year as a Giant, he seems to have found a groove drawing praise earlier in the day from Coach Coughlin. Wright has been taking plenty of snaps and is most certainly playing his way into the competition for the spot at backup quarterback. ( I wouldnt go running out and buying his jersey yet though. He's still slow to get the ball off. He's the only QB there who holds the ball longer than Kerry Collins. Even blocking and pass rushing at half speed the receivers are still waiting for him to throw the ball. reminds me of Chris Berman - Tick .. ticktickticktick Tick ..) - Lawrence Tynes connected on field goals of 31, 36 (twice), and 41 yards. He missed a 31 and 45 yarder as well. ( Yeah he made a few but it wasnt that big of a deal as his misses were. The 45 yarder was closer than the 31 yard miss ) - Bryan Khel had his finest moment so far intercepting Woodson. It was the second interception by the defense. ( The pass went right to him. Easy pick. If he dropped it he'd still be doing push ups - it was that easy of an INT ) - Toomer had a nice touchdown grab as he was able to outmuscle fellow veteran Sam Madison. The matchup between the two had their fellow teammates buzzing while joking at their expense at the same time. ( Best pass and catch of camp ) - Lastly, the Giants attempted a two minute drill which was run by Wright. Having to go downfield in only 1:24 with one timeout the defense was able to keep the offense off the board. ( because of Wright's lack of finding the open receiver. Me and boy were right by the clock and could see how off wright was. Barely a few attempts at sidelines passes. Too many short passes and runs in the middle. you just knew the Defense was all over this drill ) - All in all it was one of the best practices so far in camp. That’s all for today but stay logged on for more practice highlights tomorrow right here on Giants.com. ( Definitely the best day of practice thus far. Stay logged on for more corrections of camp highlights from giants.com ... LoL ) |

I should know today whether I'm going up Friday night/Sat morning. The guy that could get us the sideline passes could be a little upset that my bosses son decided not to play at Albany and is playing for a Div.Ia school in PA. A little bitchy if you ask me, considering the kid's father is a Great Dane Hall of Fame'er. |

Imo Both Moss and Jennings are goners, especially with the emergence of Hixon(same style of reciever but much better)I've known about DJ Hall for a while,Kirwin and T Ryan loved what they saw when they were at camp Sat.He needs to have a mystery injury, because he will not last through waivers |

Jennings is no doubt a long shot, and I agree....I really don't see how Moss makes this team. If there's one thing he excels at, I'm still waiting to learn of it. If he were a great PR, I could get onboard with keeping him. But the guy runs horrible routes, drops way too many balls and can't hold onto the ball when returning, from what I'm to understand. So why should he have a roster spot? Lord knows he doesn't play on any other special teams. Cut your losses and get rid of the loser. Bradshaw would be my PR and that excludes Moss from any role on this team. |

ALBANY, N.Y. - Drew and Jason Rosenhaus were both in attendance at practice tonight. Earlier in the day, Drew said he would be speaking with WR Plaxico Burress after practice and then have a pow-wow with the team. We'll see if anything develops in Rosenhaus' third trip here since the start of camp. As I type from my car, they're both talking to assistant GM Kevin Abrams. The fact that they're both here leads me to believe they're trying as hard as they can to end this thing now. Anyway, this morning's practice was a jog-thru. Tonight's session I'd say was a 3/4-speed workout. It was ugly at times and I think it's because these guys are tired of these limited-contact practices. They need to play a game in the worst way. I can see it all the way from QB Eli Manning to the young guys who were dropping balls like crazy. Here's the report: INJURIES *Okay, this is officially getting ridiculous. WR Brandon London was out of action tonight with a hip flexor injury. With Burress(ankle), Amani Toomer (leg), David TyreeSteve Smith and Mario Manningham (quad) already out, there were only five healthy receivers practicing. (knee/PUP), *CB Sam Madison (sports hernia) and OT Shane Olivea (back) did not practice. *G Chris Snee (shoulder) was back in action. THE STARTERS *S James Butler closed down to make a stop on a run. Safeties coach Dave Merritt was very pleased with that play. *TE Kevin Boss dropped a ball on a hook right near the goal line but came right back to catch a quick out. Boss later caught a 20-yard sail to the right side from Manning. *Great play by S Michael Johnson to knock away a ball in the end zone. *RB Brandon Jacobs was pretty slick on one play when he slipped past DE Justin Tuck on a quick route and then caught a bullet pass. *K Lawrence Tynes, on the high grass: 33 (good), 36 (no good, wide right), 38 (good), 40 (good) and a 38-yard situational kick to win it: GOOD! THE BACKUPS *WR Sinorice Moss had the first pass of team practice go right off his hands and into Butler's grasp. It was a quick slant for Moss from Manning and it should have been an easy completion. Moss had two catches on a pair of shot crosses during 7-on-7s near the goal line and then, finally, showed a little something when he went HIGH (and I mean HIGH!!) for a ball in the end zone. Moss didn't come down with the ball because Butler dislodged the bal, but I saw some serious ups right there. But again, we need to see this more consistently from Moss, who added a TD on a short cross past LB Jonathan Goff from QB Andre' Woodson. *WR Michael Jennings went down on a quick in from Manning and couldn't haul in the ball. Didn't look like he needed to go down to make the catch. *Jennings recovered to end practice with a TD on a ball from Woodson into a very, very tight spot. *LB Tank Daniels would have had a tackle for loss on a run by RB Reuben Droughns. *QB Anthony Wright and TE Jerome Collins were both gesturing toward each other after a bad miscommunication. *TE Darcy Johnson had a drop that was right in his hands on a ball over the middle. THE YOUNG GUYS *CB Darren Barnett had two straight PDs on balls in red-zone 7-on-7s. *S Kenny Phillips had a nice INT on a ball from Wright for WR D.J. Hall. But the most impressive part of the play was when he had the smarts to take a knee in the end zone for a touchback. If he does that in 7-on-7s, you know he'll do it in a game instead of trying to be a hero. *Hall had a ball that went right through his hands on a cross. He let it eat him up. *And then TE Eric Butler dropped a pass. The dropsies were contagious tonight, just like injuries to receivers seem to be. That's it. Not a ton to report because of the slow speed and a shortened practice. |

Kicking over grass Being a kicker without competition at an NFL training camp can be like watching the grass grow. For Lawrence Tynes, that's a bad analogy. Yesterday, the Giants' kicker gave the grass at the University at Albany a bad review. "The fields? I think they're terrible," he said. "The grass is long, it's soft, it's uphill or downhill. It's not conducive to hitting. The spot where I want to kick the ball, I never see it because the grass is too long. But you have to keep the field long in camp because you're on all the fields. You just have to deal with it." Tynes said he asked if he could work on the lacrosse field with artificial turf at Albany, but the request was denied. BOTTOM LINE Rookie LB Jonathan Goff will play strong side with the second unit and finish the game in the middle tomorrow night. The Giants like Goff, they're just having trouble finding a home for him right now. |
