How can't you love this kid at this point? ![]() July 29, 2008 Phillips lives for the big hit Kenny Phillips is going to hurt somebody It might happen in camp, it might happen in the preseason, or it might happen in a regular season game. But he’s going to take someone’s head off, eventually. After all, as he sees it, that’s part of his job. “That’s the part I like the most,” the rookie safety said today. “It’s also kind of frustrating (during training camp) because I’m there and I know what I’d do if I had the chance to hit these guys. It just feels good to know that I’m in position and when the time comes I will make those big hits.” By now, everyone is aware that the Giants’ first-round pick is capable of making those big hits. At almost every practice he’s either leveled a receiver or a running back, or been so close to doing so that he’s made everyone cringe as he pulls up at the last possible second. Every once in a while, Tom Coughlin gently reminds him that these are non-contact drills and that those receivers and running backs are his teammates. Curbing his aggressiveness isn’t an easy job. “It’s crazy,” he said. “Sometimes I see the ball in the air and I’m running full speed and at the last minute I’m like, ‘No, don’t do it.’ I find myself kind of moving out of the way. It’s kind of weird.” That’s why Phillips can’t wait for the preseason games to start. He’s enjoying his role as the free safety with the Giants, roaming free and lining up receivers. At Miami, his job was mostly to play closer to the line of scrimmage where he was a big factor in stopping the run. But to Phillips, there’s nothing quite like lining up a defenseless receiver and knocking him into next week. It even feels better to him than picking off a pass. “I think so,” he said. “If you knock a guy out, that just scares him for the next time he comes across the middle. That’s when you get that interception. So most of the time when you see me, I’m probably going to try to take the big hit first and get the interception later.” Those big hits, of course, have been a missing ingredient in the Giants’ secondary for years. There were high hopes that Gibril Wilson was going to be that guy, but his aggressiveness was never the same after suffering a lingering neck/shoulder injury after a big collision during his rookie season. Wilson, who left for the Raiders in the offseason, was a good safety. But for years there hasn’t been anyone in the Giants’ defensive backfield to really fear. Phillips wants to be that guy. He wants receivers to think twice about crossing into the middle or settling into an open space. He wants them to always know that he’s there. “That’s what I’m hoping for,” he said. “When I go out there in the preseason I’m definitely going to try to do what I’ve been doing in practice - get in position to take someone’s head off. I won’t try to hurt them intentionally, I’ll just do my job. If that (head-hunting) reputation comes, then … cool. I’ll take it.” |

And there's been a lot of rumbling about Terrell Thomas. He has apparently looked really good thus far. I'm excited to watch this defense. |

Holy crap, part of today's report from Vacchiano: • WR Michael Jennings made a nice, reaching catch over the middle on a pass from QB Anthony Wright that led him just a little bit too far. Had that not been a non-contact drill, though, it would’ve been dangerous because S Kenny Phillips had him lined up for what would’ve been a big hit. • Nice pass from Wright, deep over the middle to TE Darcy Johnson that was broken up by LB Tank Daniels, who went step for step with the tight end and broke it up. … Later on in practice, Wright and Johnson hooked up on a very similar route. This time Johnson hung on, but lurking right there once again was Phillips. I’m telling you, he’s going to hurt someone. |

And yet all the mainstreem anti NY Giant media outlets(ESPN,FSN) are now not even putting the Giants in the playoffs,we regressed,we were a fluke, ect(one douchbag on FSN even said that the fairy tale is over and time for the little boys to go to sleep and let the adults play(refering to the Cowfuckers) I actually got through to that station(didn't have my Sirius unit with me) but they would not let me through to diss the host for that ignorant comment(furthering my conspiracy theory that Jerry Jones has bought the 2 major sports networks to talk up the Cowfaggots and talk down the Giants |

The last serious hit I can remember by any of our safties was when Shawn Williams absolutely LIT UP Larry Fitzgerald. Week 1 of '05 and it was Warner's first game after leaving NY. Garbage time and we had the game sewn up, but it was just a short post, and the second he caught it, there was SW. Guarantee that Fitz still remembers it
Thats what I'm talkin' about  |

what surprises me with the media dissing us is that for years the most outstanding problem with our defense has been the secondary, now we have what could be the most talented secondary that we've had in years and they still diss us, we're going to rush the hell out of the passer and we'll cover a whole lot better, Kiwanuka has improved his play at SLB, Pierce is still in the middle so that leaves only WSLB that could be a question and that is only if Wilkinson doesn't step up and if that happens we have Clark who can play at a decent level, so what is the medias problem.... |

Garnes lit some people up, but he couldn't cover a table. Similar to SW. Stoutmire would lay the wood at times too, but same problem in coverage. I don't remember a guy who could cover AND be very physical from the safety spot. I can't come up with one. Myron Guyton? Not exactly Ed Reed. |

I remember Stoutmire absolutely fucking up either Randy Moss or TO on a Monday night game. I'm leaning toward Moss, but I know it was one of those guys. They were going side to side in the end zone and when the ball came near them, Stout fucking hammered him. Biggest hit I remember him laying on somebody. I'm almost sure it was Moss. Might have been in '01...

Vacchiano from today: I’m telling you, Kenny Phillips is going to hurt someone. I watched QB David Carr throw a nice pass down field in the direction of WR Mario Manningham. The receiver seemed open and I thought he was going to catch it and then - boom! - out of nowhere Phillips came charging in. He nearly made the interception and nearly took Manningham’s head off, all at the same time. He’s got to be in the receivers’ heads by now. I know he’s in my head. Every time I feel something moving behind me I quickly look to find out where the rookie safety is.

Sounds like Theismann taking a timeout because he couldn't find LT. He was on the sidelines for 1 play to catch his breath. True story  |
