In all fairness those gentlemen referenced: Montana, Elway, P. Manning and Bradshaw did not go to teams that had personalities such as Shockey already established. Even still it took most, with the exception of Manning, a couple of years to establish themselves. In the case of Bradshaw, more than a couple. In his 4th and 5th seasons he was still not the uncontested starter.

My point was about leadership, not about how long it took for them to start playing well. If you're referring to the fact that it took them a while to become leaders, I disagree.

Do you think Bradshaw or Elway or Marino would have stood for Shockey's antics? Do you think they would have established who the leader was?

Hypothetically, if any of the great QBs and great leaders were put in this position, I don't think ANYBODY would be talking about how Shockey was traded in order to allow Marino to be the leader of the team.

something to think about that no one has spoken about, especially the timing.
Maybe Reese didn't think there was a player on the draft board when the Saints were picking, and decided to take a chance that Shockey would not be such an ass.
Who was there with the Saints' 2nd round pick? There was not that big a difference between Manningham and the recievers sitting there,a lot of people were frothing at the mouth about Conner falling, but he fell into the 3rd.No linemen on either side worth that pick.

Disagree or not, most of them were NOT the leaders on their teams when they got there.

Elway in his rookie year was pretty lost so I doubt how much he would have gone after a Shockey. Bradshaw was still fighting with Hanratty and Gilliam in his 5th season to be starter so I don't think he was ruling the locker room either. Marino and Peyton were exceptions to the rule.

All this presupposes that there is much, if any merit to the idea that Shockey was inhibiting Eli's development. I don't buy that he was.

Not a bad point Cyber, but quite honestly....I tend to doubt it. Firstly, the trade would have been complete well before the selections that you had mentioned. Secondly, it would lead one to believe that they felt next year's second round choices were more valuable. I just don't think they would operate that way. Especially given the fact that they would have certainly drafted a TE if we traded him prior to draft day. The more suitable scenario.

I really think it came down to the argument with Reese. He signed his ticket so to speak.

My impression of them is that they wouldn't put up with somebody throwing their hands up in the air after a bad pass. I would have to think that most would be in that camp as well.

I don't care if they were starters, scrubs, great players, or practice squad players. A leader is a leader, whether you're taking some, half or all the snaps. So I suppose your view is that in practice, receivers would step all over Bradshaw and he'd accept it because he was still fighting for his job in his 5th season?

Do you think Drew Brees is going to put up with that shit? Or are Marino and Peyton really the exception?

Guarenteed that if there was somebody Reese really had high on his draft board when the Saints were up he would have pulled the trigger.
And also,he probably thought that none of the TEs at that spot were any better than what we have now.

I disagree.

And we would not have taken a TE in the 2nd round.
