GLENDALE, Ariz. - When Plaxico Burress arrived at Giants hotel headquarters hours after giving The New York Post his 23-17 Super Bowl prediction, he proclaimed his troublesome right ankle 97 percent.

Then he didn't practice Wednesday.

Not to worry.

He was going to practice Thursday.

Then he didn't practice Thursday, and it was said there was swelling and soreness in his left knee.

Worry.

Considering he had been able to practice on an intermittent basis since November, this was clearly a setback, and at the worst possible time.

So yesterday, 48 hours from Super Bowl XLII, all eyes were on Burress when the Giants hit the practice field. Eli Manning's eyes, Tom Coughlin's eyes, the eyes of New York.

Because it is one thing to miss the entire week of practice then go play during the regular season, quite another to miss the entire week of practice then go try to beat the 18-0 Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Practice-o?

Practice-no!

No. 17 could only try to participate in individual drills and is listed as questionable.

"He ran a couple of slants," Coughlin said. "He took a play in the green zone (inside the 20). That was about all we did with him."

Burress was listed as questionable before catching 11 passes for 151 yards in the NFC Championship game against the Packers.

Giants fans who are big on wishful thinking are probably hoping Coughlin is giving Bill Belichick a taste of his own injury report medicine.

Burress has waited eight years for this moment, and there was and is no way he would ever miss a Super Bowl. But go ask Patriots fans how terrified they would be right now if Randy Moss couldn't so much as hobble after Tom Brady's passes until the 11th hour.

The Giants cannot shock the world if Burress is a shell of himself. So the Giants and their fans won't be able to exhale until they tune in tomorrow night at 6:30 ET. Then, and only then, will we find out how much Burress has to offer, whether he can be the dominant go-to guy he was in Green Bay, whether he will be forced to somehow give the kind of courageous performance Terrell Owens gave in Super Bowl XXXIX.

Or whether his one-legged magic will finally run out and bring Manning and the offense to a screeching halt.

Because let's face it, the Giants will need all hands — and legs — on deck against the Pats. It's sobering enough for them that Belichick has had two weeks to figure out how to take Burress out of the game.

Without Burress as a legitimate threat, it ups the ante on Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, and if the Patriots can load up to stop the run, then it ratchets up the burden on Manning, who will have to somehow spread the ball around to Amani Toomer and rookies Steve Smith and Kevin Boss. The last domino to fall is the Giants defense, which would have to find a way to make Brady look absolutely mortal.

"He's improved; he did it all year under all kinds of circumstances," Coughlin said of Burress. "We've just got to be hopeful he can do it one more time."

The Giants and their fans have been waiting 17 years for a championship.

Between now and Super Bowl XLII, they wait anxiously, on pins and needles, for No. 17.

I can't believe the stink they're making over him not practicing. He practiced, what, a whole 3 times during the season?

My, oh my, how I love something from nothing stories.
