Laffin' it up and cumming all over themselves at the prospect of the Giants trying to contain Moss. Moss is the least of NY's worries. Week 17: But for the bomb, Moss was held to 5 catches for 35 yards. And the bomb? OC McDaniels, to his credit, noticed that Madison appeared to have come up lame on the immediately prior play and called the same route to be run right at him again. Only later did the rest of the NFL watching public learn of Madison's abdominal strain. Point? Brady and Moss can connect on that route in practice, sans coverage, 99 times out of 100. That won't be their reality on Sunday. Blue should be aggressive with a corner on Moss at the LOS, hit him off the snap of the ball and jam him inside. You may not shut him down entirely, but the Giants should be able to limit his deep ball threat. Our corners are scoffed at by Pats Nation, none of whom qualify as a true "shut down" guy. [I believe Ross will garner that reputation along the course of his career, but his body of work is too sparse right now for the rest of the league's fans to appreciate what we already do.] All four of our corners, however, have played far and away above their regular season performance in these playoffs and none of them are exactly Toast Patterson. They're all adequate and, as we've seen in recent weeks, all capable of pleasantly surprising us with great play. The bigger concern is NY's often soft middle being exploited by Welker, Watson, Stallworth & Gaffney, and Faulk sliding out into the flat. Moss' simple presence on the field, running fly routes, will open up green behind the LOS and create lanes for the other receivers to nestle into. NY has to do a better job against the dink and dunk stuff that was, really, their undoing in Week 17, when Brady & Co. connected for at least 10 yards on first down eight times. But how? When NE has the ball, this game rests squarely on the shoulders of the D-Line. The Giants' front has been called the best of the last decade, and they will have to play as such for NY to win. Blue doesn't have to go Jimmy Johnson blitz crazy to get pressure on Brady, and shouldn't. However, the front four must harrass him, get in his face, disrupt his timing, and force his decisions in confused situations. While they only sacked him once in the first game, they did all of those other things well and will have to step up even larger on Sunday. Spags must also switch up the run-stuffing and pass-rushing tackles quickly so as not to be victimized by NE's quick snap O and Maroney in mismatches up the gut against Tuck and Kiwanuka. Other keys: TOP: NY's best defense is, really, keeping NE's off the field. Jints lost the TOP battle by 12 minutes a month ago. Ideally, that figure should be reversed. The Pats' defense sucks ass. They can do this. Field Position: Feags must be huge. Coverage can not afford any cracks. NY needs to be efficient on O, eat the clock, score TD's instead of FGs, and make NE start deep in their own territory on change of possession. Other than that it's a cinch, but for these talking heads to leave the impression that NY is intimidated by Mr. Moss, and has virtually no chance of neutralizing his impact on the game's outcome, is just moronic. |

I agree about the secondary. Our corners aren’t the best in the league, but I’ll tell ya what….they’re playing like it right now. I’m not sure if we’d put Madison, Ross or Webster on Moss, but whoever it is, you have to hit him and NEVER let him release to the outside. Make him go inside – where he doesn’t want to go. Make him catch the ball in the middle of the field and get blown up by Pierce-Wilson and Co. As far as I’m concerned, if he ends up with 2 tds, we could still win the game. If in fact we find a way to stop the Pats in the middle of the field, I could deal with 2 Moss TDs. I’m not convinced that you can beat the Pats by rushing 4 guys. Brady would pick us apart and it would not be pretty. Imo, we need to rush 5 at all times with blitz packages at certain times bringing more. If in fact we can get to him with 5, we have a really good chance to win this game. If we only brought 4, they could double both DE’s. We want them to pick their poison, double either Osi or Stray. Then the other guy needs to have a big game. We also need a big game from Tuck. Let’s face it, we need to play out of minds on defense. We need to get to Brady a split second before we did several times in Week 17. On offense, what do you think about opening up in the no huddle? Do it on the first two possessions. Shake things up and start to tire out that defense early. Then you bring in the Monster (27) to abuse them when they’re on their heels. I know most people want to control the clock, but let’s face it…it’s not going to be a 17-14 game in perfect weather. No matter how much we wish it would be. We need to score and we need to score often. Especially if we’re milking the clock in the meantime, because that means our possessions will be cut by one or two. So although I am all for time of possession, I’d love to see us start out flingin’ the ball around (Cyber just winced). Get two TDs on the board in the first qtr and put the pressure on them, rather than visa versa. Giants 31-27 Last Pats possession, Tuck sacks Brady, causes a fumble and we run my favorite play…..the kneel-down. |

Like Hamp said, gotta hit these 'finesse' guys as early and often as possible so that they regret even thinking about stretching out for a ball. Wait, that sounds like a familiar game plan that was used in a prior Super Bowl the Giants were in! But seriously, Tom Brady looked mildly confused when the Giants were 'hitting' him in their last meeting, which kinda shows that he isn't used to taking many hits. Also, with the way Plaxico has been flapping his lips lately, it sounds like he is pretty amped up at the thought of playing against Hobbs/Samuels again. Need to take advantage of that size matchup. And much like our own LBs, maybe exploit the age of the Patriots LB corp as some of them aren't nearly as fast as they used to be? Or maybe even bait some of the Patriots more 'volatile' players into making dumb penalties? |

If our Defense sucks so bad why does Plexiglass think the Giants are going only going to score 2 TDs (and some FGs) against them ?![]() Plax is an outwardly sensitive guy. He really cares about the feelings of others. Why air his true belief as to just how badly lopsided it is going to be on national television? He obviously didn't want to insult the old men. Let them have some dignity in these last few days before it is all stripped away. That's Plax. He's good that way. Good catch on my Kiwi typo. Thanks. Meant to say Alford. |

Hampy,I have no problem airing out early and often here,I think we can.Problem is that then the Patriots would then turn it around on us and go ball control. And the Patriots LBs are Very old?we hit them early and often with Jacobs/ball control offense, they will be worn out at the end of the game, and this team will be ripe for the picking. |

Hamp, I'm glad to see you didn't retire from here entirely after all. Good chatting football with you again. I've always admired your substantive football posts because, even if I don't agree with your particular thesis of the moment, it is always one that is well well articulated, reason-based, and passes the straight-face test. You don't say shit like the Giants will lose because they play for the "junior varsity" within a "Triple AAA" conference. I mean, someone who would say something like that is either just a troll, a kid, or a mental deficient, and not worth our time, right? Here, we have no disagreement at all. Although I didn't say as much in my first post, I think that attacking aggressively early is a very good plan. Risky? Sure. Could we eat a pick-six? Sure. But we're playing the "best team of all time" (just ask their wagoneers), so it makes no sense to play conservatively so as "not to lose." They need to "go out (on O) like a pack of crazed dogs, and have some fun!" That said, I still firmly believe that we must also keep their aerial circus off the field as much as possible and will ultimately have to win the TOP battle over the course of 60 minutes. Your vision is excellent. Get Tony and Junior and the rest sucking wind early, hurry it up, hopefully get on the board twice in the first quarter or by less than half-way through the second, and then transition to a move-the-chains, grind-it-out bore fest, a la the 1990 club v. Buffalo. I like it. On defense, I didn't mean that we should not blitz at all, or that rushing four would be appropriate as a game-long proposition. What I meant to imply is that it all (our ability to win, that is) starts with the push of those guys up front. Spags isn't wired not to blitz, but he's going to have to disguise packages well, and use them more sparingly than he would as against another opponent, so as to keep NE guessing. Whomever is coming must not tip their hand early; they must not be suckered by Brady's hard count, and breaks toward the castle gate must be timed perfectly or he will recognize the attack and simply change the play to exploit the vacated area. I think we'll see some zone blitzes, with backers telegraphing a charge and then backing into coverage as a late-streaking DB actually makes the assault. You used the phrase "pick your poison" in your earlier post, and that is Spags' cross to bear, as well. If they repeatedly come flat out with 7 or 8, the Patriots will put up 40. On this side of the ball, then, LT's famous exhortation would not seem the most appropriate advice to follow*, and Spags is NOT a moron. Too many weapons, chief among them the QB with the best total field sense, vision, check-thru and accuracy that I have ever seen, no offense to Marino and Montana intended. --------------------------------------------------- * On the issue of blitzing, only. Even in a less-reckless scheme, however, I agree that all 11 must play out of their heads on every down. |

12C - thanks for the kind words my friend. No doubt about it, our front 4 must beat their guy more often than not. If they don't, it'll be ugly. Real ugly. I've heard the comparison to the '90 super bowl a few times. It's an excellent comparison because that Bills team may have had one of the most prolific passing games in the history of the NFL. Until the freakin Pats. lol However the truly exciting part of this game is that we're armed with a significantly better offense than '90. When clicking, we can match point for point with anybody. If you think about it, would you say we played well on defense in Week 17 vs NE? The strange this is, if I weren't to consider the score, I would say yes...we played a pretty good game that night. But they scored 38. So we just have to play better, because chances are, we're not scoring more than 35. I'm not completely certain how much better we can play against this offense. I thought we gave a great effort that night. But I guess like you said, we need more pressure on the qb, plain and simple. If we play better to the tune of hitting Brady more often, getting more sacks and perhaps making a play or two causing a turnover, that could lead to.."I shook up the world!!! I shook up the world!!!" As I was looking for that whole quote from Ali, I came across this: Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them: A desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. I'm just sayin'. |

I would LOVE if the Pats went ball control. BRING IT ON!!! :nyg: Don't get me wrong, I'm still all for ball control and as 12C said, we need to have the TOP edge at the end of the game. That said, if I thought we could score 21 and win....I'd agree that we should pound Jacobs and Bradshaw early and often. But I just don't see that. I think we need to score 30 to win...and that's if we get to Brady on defense. We'll need the points either way, so I would rather getting up on them early if we can, try to grab the momentum if at all possible..., then demoralize them by punching them in the face with a 265lb beast. But who knows, I was wrong with our approach vs Dallas on both sides of the ball for the most part. |
