May 10, 2007 Shockey Could Join Eli & Plaxico on Monday Could it really be true? Will both Jeremy Shockey AND Plaxico Burress be throwing with Eli Manning next week? ![]() I wouldn't count that chicken until it's fully hatched, but Burress is already at Giants Stadium and Shockey has apparently sent a text message to Manning informing him that he'll be at the stadium next week. If it's true, it's a huge step for all three players. Burress has already displayed some impressive maturity by abandoning his usual private workouts in Miami in favor of coming north to work out with his quarterback and promising that he'd be here for the duration of the offseason program. Shockey, who has been vocal and adamant about staying in Florida in the past, would be showing the same qualities if he returned, too. And for Manning, it could be a sign that he's finally fulfilling his role as the leader of the Giants. In the past, both Burress and Shockey have ignored him when he asked them to work out at Giants Staduim. Maybe Manning's voice is a little more influential now. Of course, the key question about Shockey is: Will he stay? Remember, in April, 2005 Shockey answered Manning's public pleas to work out with him by returning to Giants Stadium in late April for two whole days that included one, 45-minute throwing session. Asked why he wasn't staying longer, Shockey insisted he was getting a better workout with his personal trainer at the University of Miami. "I want to be the best player I can be and in order for me to do that I think I've got to be pushed by people that I know can push me," Shockey said back then. "I'm not trying to cause any controversies. I'm trying to do what's best for my physical body. I could've taken the easy way and come back here and do the workouts here and just been OK, or I could've went there and accepted the challenge and made it tough on myself every day." Coincidentally, the media will be at Giants Stadium on Monday for Shockey's expected arrival, since it is the last day of a three-day rookie mini-camp. The Giants first OTA (organized team activity) is scheduled for May 22. They will have nine between then and the end of the offseason program on June 15. Teams are allowed by NFL rules to have as many as 14. * * Good news for you (and for me): the NFL has just issued a new media access policy which requires teams to provide, among many other things, much greater access to assistant coaches. It also forces teams to open at least one of every three OTA days to the media, meanwhile we'll actually get a chance to see (and report) what Manning, Shockey and Burress are doing on the field. * * Add another rookie free-agent to the Giants' list. Wisconsin QB John Stocco will reportedly be at the Giants' rookie camp this weekend on a tryout basis. That makes 20 names that have leaked out so far, including 13 players that have officially signed contracts. |
