Just an opinion, but in Philly they don't really emphasize LBs. Think of all the LBs that have thrived in Philly, but failed elsewhere. Or even LBs that are mediocre at best, but are productive in Philly. It seems the Eagles, under Jim Johnson, emphasize press corners, edge rushers, quick 1-gap DTs and safeties with range. Edge rushers we have in abundance, but... In round 1, we selected a corner in Ross who admits he's best in press coverage. He has speed, but more importantly the size and long arms to engage a reciever early, either stuffing him or re-directing him. In round 3, we took a quick, 1-gap DT in Alford who can penetrate, disrupt and open up blitz lanes for LBs and safeties. Honestly, every year there are reaches or guys who were on none of the draft sites that go earlier and succeed. But the teams who pick players who best fit their system are often the ones that have the most success. So do these picks reflect the new defensive scheme? And if so, does a reserve LB like Torbor suddenly become more valuable? He was a really good pass rusher in college and is at his best moving foward as opposed to dropping in coverage. The list could go on. Maybe the corners are better in press and short zones behind a penetrating blitz, etc. Either way, do you think these picks are reflective of the new defense and the new regime actually trying to find players who fit said system? Or is this just wishful thinking on my part?

Way too soon to tell and I for one am not making any assumptions. Spags certainly has had his say in this draft. There's a bit of a hole in your theory however. Unless I'm mistaken, Ross played in a very heavy zone oriented defense. He may "like" press coverage, but his experience is overwhelmingly zone. |

True Hamp, but he said that he played mostly press until this season when they played a lot of quarters because of injuries. Then again, this was the only season he was a full-time starter. From his Q&A: Q: How much press coverage did you play in college? A: We played quite a bit my freshman, sophomore, and junior years. This past year we played a lot of quarters due to injuries in the secondary. Q: Is playing press coverage a strength of yours? A: Yes. I feel like that is my strength to get down there and lock up on a guy. That is something I did in high school and like I said in my first three years of college. I really love to man up on guys and take them out of the game. |

Imagine if our first round draft pick said, "I'd rather play off and in a deep zone. I'm not comfortable playing a receiver one on one, especially off the line of scrimmage." |
