Strahan Works Media Day
Giants All-Pro DE interviews players for FOXSports' “Best Damn Sports Show Period.”
By Michael Eisen, Giants.com

January 31, 2007

MIAMI – Peyton Manning’s podium at Tuesday’s Media Day interview session was surrounded by perhaps 300 reporters with notebooks, microphones and tape recorders when someone shouted a question from the Indianapolis Colts quarterback’s left side.

“Wow,” Manning said when he caught a glimpse of the questioner. “Wow.”

No, Manning was not being queried by a beautiful woman or someone from “60 Minutes.” The man firing the queries was none other than seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan, who was doing his regular Super Bowl gig for FOX’s, “Best Damn Sports Show Period.”

Accompanied by a cameraman and a producer, Strahan made the rounds as the Colts players and coaches answered questions from the hundreds of reporters in attendance from dozens of countries.

One of his first exchanges was with Colts three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney, Indianapolis’ sack specialist.

Strahan: “Dwight, I’ve been watching you man over the years and you get up the field and spinning and doing all those things. Do you think that I can incorporate some of that into my game?”

Freeney; “I think you are one of the new-age elite players. I grew up watching you. When I was a real young age you were tearing up the league. You’re still doing your thing out there.”

Strahan: “You were watching me. So are you trying to say I’m old-age?”

Freeney: “The thing is, you’re like wine. You get better with time.”

Strahan then made his way over to defensive tackle Anthony “Booger” McFarland, who, like Strahan, wears No. 92.

McFarland: “We played golf one time and since then you’ve been running.”

Strahan: “Who won?”

McFarland: “You won. But I will say this. I’ve been searching for you for three years and you’ve been hiding out in Jersey. The only time I see you is in the newspapers. I didn’t say that was good or bad.”

Strahan; “It hasn’t been good lately.”

Later, the two defensive linemen conversed about another subject.

McFarland: “I play inside. Usually ends can’t play inside.”

Strahan: “I’m not the usual end.”

McFarland: “Two years ago, when you were 20 pounds heavier, you could have played inside. But you lost all that weight and tried to become a pretty boy model like (Osi) Umenyiora. You don’t want to come inside and get dirty anymore.”

Strahan: “If anybody sees you outside this uniform, they know you are a pretty 300-plus pounds.”

McFarland: “I’m the best-looking 300-pound guy in the league. There’s no doubt about that.”

Strahan: “What’s your best attribute?”

McFarland: “My smile.”

Strahan: “Don’t smile at me like that, I’m not going on a date with you.”

McFarland: “I hope not.”

Strahan then set his sights on Manning, who drew by far the largest crowd at media day. As is his custom, Manning was polite and detailed as he answered several questions without noticing Strahan standing off to the side. When Strahan spoke, Manning immediately smiled.

Strahan asked Manning about the now-famous gyrations he performs at the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped.

Strahan: “A few years ago, you and I hung out in Jacksonville and you told me all the hand-signal stuff is a farce. Is that true?”

Manning: “Well, I don’t remember saying that. Obviously, they do mean something. I wish I didn’t have to do all those to tell you the truth, Michael. You think about how everyone remembers quarterbacks. You think about John Elway you remember the throwback across the field and the great scrambles. With Troy Aikman you think about a classic dropback. And Dan Marino had the quickest release. I feel when people think about me I’m picking my nose or scratching my ear or pulling my eyes and doing all these goofy signals that I have to do.

“But it’s just part of what we have to do in the no-huddle offense. We have to have some sort of hand signals in order to communicate to Marvin (Harrison) and Reggie (Wayne). Sometimes we try to huddle up again, because I get tired of doing those signals. But Marvin and Reggie say no, I’m not coming back to the huddle, I’m staying out where I am – you get the play out to me. They become so used to staying out there, that’s what it’s turned into.”

Strahan then asked Manning if he had a message for his younger brother Eli, the Giants’ quarterback. “Give him a hand signal and send him your message,” Strahan said.

Manning pointed at Strahan, then gave him a thumbs-up.

“We’re in trouble,” Strahan said, “if we have to depend on Peyton Manning to help Eli and the Giants.”

Later, Strahan was asked if he enjoyed being the interviewer instead of the interviewee.

“It’s okay,” Strahan said. “The Media Day stuff is okay. There are too many people, too much of a crowd and too much bulldogging. I’m not necessarily loving it, but it is what it is.”

NOTES
- Strahan, who missed seven of the final eight games of the season with a Lisfranc sprain, said his foot is “fine.”

- Eli and the Giants didn’t make the Super Bowl, but there are still plenty of Mannings in the game. There’s Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, of course. And the Bears’ defensive backfield includes fourth-year cornerback Ricky Manning, Jr. and rookie safety Danieal Manning.

“I think it’s kind of unique,” Peyton Manning said. “I was checking the roster and checking the scouting report and having three Mannings in this game is a good thing. Both of those guys are outstanding players.”
