Giants promote Quinn to special teams coach
Tuesday, January 30, 2007

Just as Tom Coughlin was officially filling one coaching vacancy, another one popped up on his staff -- which he immediately filled.

With Chris Palmer being welcomed aboard as quarterbacks coach Monday, Coughlin announced that Tom Quinn will replace Mike Sweatman as special teams coordinator.

Sweatman announced his retirement after 23 seasons as an NFL assistant, including two stints with the Giants. Quinn was Sweatman's assistant last season.

So Coughlin will have three different coordinators on his 2007 staff: Kevin Gilbride on offense, Steve Spagnuolo on defense and Quinn on special teams.

Palmer, 57, was named quarterbacks coach Saturday and will spend most of his time working with Eli Manning.

"I had Chris speak with Eli the other day and they talked for about 20 to 25 minutes," said Coughlin. "Chris will contribute to the game plans, but we're specifically asking the quarterbacks coach to be involved in the fundamentals of the position."

"I'm excited about Coach Palmer becoming our quarterbacks coach," Manning said.

"I had the opportunity to meet with him on Friday and we had a good conversation. I think we communicated well. We talked about some things I need to do to improve. I look forward to getting started and working with him during the off-season to become a better quarterback."
