I am participating in a All-Time NFL mock draft, where you draft the best players in history to assemble the best team. Its almost my turn and I'm looking at Phil Simms. Which quarterbacks would you say he is better than, out of the ones listed below? And what can you tell me about Phil Simms, cuz Im younger and don't remember how he played. All I know is he went to a couple of pro bowls and won 2 Super Bowls and was a great team leader. SO basically- what set him apart from these QBs? Marino had stats and a quick release, Montana had Super Bowls and comebacks from nowhere, Elway had toughness, Favre has gutsiness, etc etc. What does Phil Simms have? These are the quarterbacks already taken: 1. Joe Montana 2. Dan Marino 3. Tom Brady 4. John Elway 5. Johnny Unitas 6. "Slingin'" Sammy Baugh 7. Steve Young 8. Bart Starr 9. Peyton Manning 10. Brett Favre 11. Roger Staubach 12. "Broadway" Joe Namath 13. Y.A. Tittle 14. Otto Graham 15. Terry Bradshaw 16. Fran Tarkenton 17. Warren Moon 18. Troy Aikman 19. Sid Luckman 20. Sonny Jurgensen 21. George Blanda 22. Dan Fouts 23. Kurt Warner 24. Len Dawson 25. Jim Kelly |

Discarding the QB's from a previous era (Luckman, Tittle, Blanda, et al) I honestly wouldn't rank Simms higher than any of the others on your list. While a good reliable QB imho Simms success was a product of the Giants system.......and he was just that. A good reliable QB. Nothing flashy, sexy, or legendary like an Elway, Favre, or Montana. Parcells built a solid OL around his "Lunch Pail" guys (Bart Oates, William Roberts, Karl Nelson, Brad Benson, and Billy Ard) and their offense was attuned to the running game (O.J. Anderson & Joe Morris) rather than any passing attack. Back in those days the Giants relied on their monsterous defense to stop the other teams while the offense ran the ball as much as possible to eat up the clock. Maybe someone else can correct me here, but the only big time pass I can ever remember Simms making was a 4th and long to Bobby Johnson(?) in a game vs Minnesota that led a 4th qtr comeback during the 1st Super Bowl year. The second Super Bowl was won by Jeff Hostetler as Simms was on the IR list with an ankle injury.......again if my faulty memory is at play here anyone can feel free to straighten me out on that......you're not going to hurt my feelings. Albeit Simms had a record setting day in his one Super Bowl appearance vs the Broncos I don't think you can rank him up there as being QUOTE/UNQUOTE one of the star QB's of the league. |

Couldn't agree more with the majority of what ya posted, Gene. Mr. Simms wasn't the man with the amazing gun, couldn't run worth a damn (then again, back then, very few did and usually only out of fear of the 300 pounder coming at him) but he was one of the smartest QBs to play the game. Dan- If those QBs are already taken, what do you need the comparison vs. them for? Reasons for taking him or something along those lines? Would be able to help you more if we knew what QBs were left on the board. |

I agree with Gene mostly...just a couple. Phill was better than ..... Bart Star Namath Blanda...by a mile Sonny Warner... Some of the QBs you mention were good for reasons,Defense's they played with etc. |

I remember cursing Simms on many an afternoon. I was actually happy when Handley wanted to go with Hostetler. I really thought Hoss would be the guy after the SB win. My father said, "There is going to be a day when you are going to wish we had a guy like Phil Simms as QB." All these years later, and he was 100% right. |
