Arrington on the Road to Recovery
Linebacker a fixture at Giants Stadium rehabbing surgically repaired Achilles.

January 25 , 2007

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – When Giants training camp opened in mid-July, linebacker LaVar Arrington greeted his new team with the requisite optimism and excitement that comes with any fresh start. Having negotiated his release from the Redskins, Arrington arrived in New York healthy, happy and looking to return to the Pro Bowl form he displayed in 2003 and 2004.

“It’s a new beginning, a rebirth, and I plan to make the most of it,” Arrington told the media horde that encircled the gregarious 260-pounder practically every day.

Ironically, Arrington is adopting a similar attitude this offseason. Recovering from yet another season-shortening injury—this one to his left Achilles tendon—Arrington is spending the winter in the trainer’s room getting his body ready for 2007. Always one to look on the positive side, Arrington sees his return as just another opportunity to impress.

“It’s kind of like I’m still an unknown commodity as a New York Giant,” he said. “Sometimes you don’t get a second chance in life to take advantage of an opportunity. But I think, fortunately for me in this situation, I do have a second chance to try to have the impact and the type of presence that I know I can bring to a team.”

Arrington’s first season as a member of the Giants came to an abrupt halt, just as he appeared ready to take off in his new role.

Playing against the Cowboys in the sixth game of his New York Giants career, the 28-year old linebacker suffered the injury to his left leg on a freakish second quarter play in which he was hardly even involved.

Earlier, in the first quarter, Arrington recorded his first sack as a member of the Giants—flying through the middle of the Cowboys’ line to tackle quarterback Drew Bledsoe in the end zone for a safety.

It was Arrington’s first sack since Sept. 12, 2004 when he was a member of the Washington Redskins. Much like this past one, that season was also shortened by injury.

Following two stellar seasons in 2002 and 2003 with Washington in which he recorded 17 sacks and 10 forced fumbles, Arrington missed all but four games of the 2004 season with a knee injury. In 2005, much to his dissatisfaction, Arrington was relegated to a lesser role in the Redskins’ defensive scheme, ultimately leading to his departure.

Arrington has been coming to Giants Stadium practically every day to continue rehabbing his surgically-repaired left leg as well as to get into the best playing shape possible.

“Me and the trainers have been working our tails off,” Arrington said after a few hours of treatment and conditioning. “(Assistant Athletic Trainer) Byron Hansen and I have been really diligent on getting my legs back together. I feel really strong and in good spirits. From what the doctors say and what the trainers say, I’ll have a full recovery. I’ll be ready for mini-camp in June and stuff like that. I’ll be working out with the guys this offseason, so I’m excited. My legs feel much better than I had anticipated, so that’s a bonus.”

While he usually spends his offseasons on his 48-acre Maryland property, this winter Arrington plans on remaining in New Jersey, coming in as often as possible to work with the team’s trainers.

“I’ll be here all offseason,” he said. “I had enough offseason watching my team out there fighting and struggling, so right now I’m just getting into the best shape I possibly can. I’m getting ready to run for six quarters in a game. Not four. I’m preparing for six.”

Arrington says he is motivated by both the personal and collective frustration of 2006. On a team depleted by injuries, Arrington’s seemed to come just as he was getting comfortable in the Giants defensive scheme.

“It was unfortunate, but at the same time I feel like everything happens for a reason,” said Arrington. “Everything in God’s perfect plan happens for a reason. I think the corner may have been right there and I might have been turning it, but I’m still here.”

Sitting out the last ten weeks of the season, Arrington was forced to watch as teammate after teammate fell to devastating injuries.

“This year, for me personally and as a team, it was a bit of a disappointment because we had so much talent,” he said. “I know I still have some good plays left in me, so to come in and not have the impact on the team and the city that I had hoped for kind of didn’t sit well with me. It doesn’t sit well with me now and it didn’t sit well with me during the season.”

Arrington admits that one of the main factors in his decision to sign with the Giants was then defensive coordinator Tim Lewis. But with Eagles linebackers coach Steve Spagnuolo announced Monday as the team’s new defensive coordinator, Arrington says he and his defensive teammates will have completely new challenges ahead of them in 2007.

“I think the interesting thing about this year is I’m coming in and now the whole defense has to come together and we have to learn a new defense together,” Arrington said on Friday. “It should be pretty interesting in that sense, because now we all have to depend on one another much more than we did last year because a lot of guys were up on the learning curve of coach Lewis’ defensive scheme. It gets frustrating trying to catch up to those guys at times.”

Fuck that. Arrington is one of the few players who repeatedly proclaims his joy of being a Giant. And everything I've read regarding him since his injury tells me he is damn near killing himself to get better.

I respect that. That warrants an automatic second chance pass from me.

Cut him? why? the guy doesn't cost us any thing, his Contract is incentive laden he has to play great to earn that 49 million, and since he got hurt this year he will never see all of that 49million, the only way he will make 7 million a Year is if he's playing like the old Lavar, and if he's playing like that I don't mind paying him 7mil. he's a risk free investment.

When Lavar injured his knee as a Redskin one of the major complaints was that he didn't work hard enough to get better. Several people felt he could have got on the field sooner.

This is a different Lavar. He likes being a GIANT and he is determined to make an impact on this team and he is doing everything possible to get himself ready. Like Blue said, you have to respect that. He started off slow last year, but I felt he was showing improvement with every game last year. This year there is a new coach and he is starting off on the same playing field as everyone else. I still think he can be a great asset to this team.

Why ,really why ? Look I think he's a nice guy I'm looking at it football wise I seen people on this board just go ape shit if someone gets hurt ,well this is the same thing this guy can not stay healthy was he good yes but he "WAS" never great I'm glade he wants to be a Giant but so what Emmons is always hurt and I don't see anyone wanting him to stay around (me either)/We need to clean house and start new .I want this team to look at what he's done for the NY Giants ...fuck what he did in Washington. With a new DC who knows what but the Lavar experiment failed big time we must move on.

We obviously need a healthy Arrington next year, no matter what we decide to do in the draft. It's rather refreshing to hear a guy talk about "team" and about their excitement for the offseason workouts and camp. You don't hear much of that from veterans in the NFL nowadays. Especially on this current roster. He was said to be an emotional leader in the locker room before he got hurt and in case anybody noticed....we could use some leadership on this team.

The guy is still a relative bargain, it's not as if he's sitting there with a fat contract and we obviously are weak at that position. To cut him would be ridiculous and just further expresses the doltitude of some board members.

That's right, I made up my own word. I think it works.

G1, relax. He didn't call you out by name or attack you personally. And you're not the only one who has done some Arrington bashing, hence the "some board members".

I was really unsure of Lavar from the moment he became a Giant. I loved his attitude, and the whole Segway fiasco during the offseason last year had me liking the guy as a person. As a player I saw that he started off slow, but he really turned it on during that Dallas game before he got hurt. The two flashes he had in that game gave me a lot of hope, and I look forward to his return.

Slightly off topic, I think the same thing can be put up to the case of Will Demps. He flashed down the stretch, and if he worked on his tackles, he may even become the player we expected once he was signed.

That said, I don't doubt the defense will most likely start off slow again next year due to the fact we will have a new system in place, but by week 3, I think our defense will officially begin to be classified as "sick." That is all.

G-men for life!! :ny:

 :dunno: ;)
