Giants Hire Spagnuolo to Be Defensive Coordinator
Jan 22, 2:45 PM (ET) Email this Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -The New York Giants hired Philadelphia Eagles linebackers coach Steve Spagnuolo to be their defensive coordinator.
Spagnuolo will replace Tim Lewis, who was fired this month after three seasons with the Giants.

Spagnuolo, 47, coached the Eagles' linebackers for the past three seasons, leading a unit anchored by Pro Bowl middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter. A former assistant for Barcelona and Frankfurt of NFL Europe, Spagnuolo joined Philadelphia's coaching staff in 1999 as a defensive assistant and later spent three seasons as defensive backs coach.

He will inherit a Giants defense that was beset by injuries to star players Michael Strahan and LaVar Arrington last season, but still underperformed.

As a unit, the Giants ranked 25th in the NFL in yardage allowed (342.4 yards) and 28th against the pass (228.1 yards). They were worst in the league when opponents got inside the 20-yard line, allowing them to score touchdowns on 30 of 46 chances in the red zone, or 65.2 percent.

Defensive shortcomings were a prime factor in the Giants losing four games in the second half of the season in which they led or were tied in the fourth quarter. The capper came in a 23-20 loss to the Eagles in the wild-card game when the Giants tied the game with 5:04 to play, but allowed the winning drive as time expired.

The Eagles have a good defensive system. If any of that rubbed off on this guy, then I'll be more than happy.

All the Eagle idiots on their MB are doing the"oh he is overrated,he sucks" thing
so he must be a good hire(remember, its the Eagle fan duty to not know anything about football)

IMO,I liked his work with the Dbs..so that is a plus

From everything I've read, this guy could very well be a huge pickup. Seems he likes aggressive D's and considering he was under JJ for 8 years means something. He's responsible for coaching several pro-bowlers at various positions and was pretty big in the European league.

All I can say is it should be intersting.

I also heard he prefers a 4-6 defense...any idea what the hell that means? I get a 3-4 and a 4-3, but what the heck is a 4-6.

The '46' (forty-six) is also known as the 'Bear' (See: Bud Ryan & the Bears), but Spagnuolo's defense is the 4-6 (four-six) formation which features four down lineman and six linebackers.

That is very much impossible...only 1 DB? Talk about idiocy.
