Jaguars 26, Giants 10: Inside the Numbers! JACKSONVILLE – Notes, anecdotes and statistics from the Giants’ 26-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars: The Giants lost their second consecutive game and fell to 6-4. After holding a two-game lead at midseason, the Giants are now tied with the Dallas Cowboys for first place in the NFC East. The Giants have lost back-to-back games for the first time since their eight-game losing streak from Nov. 7-Dec. 6, 2004. Prior to last week’s Chicago game, the Giants had won their previous 11 games in which they scored first. Now they have lost two in a row when putting the first points on the board. The Giants are now 0-2 in Jacksonville; they lost in Alltel Stadium in their only previous visit there, in 1997. The Giants gained a season-low 247 total yards, their lowest output since they gained 235 yards vs. Dallas on Jan. 2, 2005, the 2004 season finale. Their previous low this season was 249 yards last week against Chicago. The Giants’ 13 first downs were also a season low and were their fewest first downs in a regular season game since they had 13 at Oakland last New Year’s Eve. The Giants had nine first downs in the NFC Wild Card loss to Carolina last January. The Giants finished with 25 rushing yards, their lowest total since they ran for 24 yards against Buffalo on Nov. 30, 2003. It was the lowest rushing total ever for a Tom Coughlin-coached team. The previous low was 26 yards for his Jaguars on Oct. 1, 2000 against Pittsburgh, a game Jacksonville lost, 24-13. The Giants’ time of possession was 19:41, the smallest amount of time they owned the ball since Dec. 5, 2004, when their possession time was 19:51 in a loss at Washington. The Giants committed three turnovers last week vs. the Bears and again Monday night. The last time they had at least three turnovers in each of two consecutive games was Sept. 7, 2003 vs. St. Louis (three interceptions) and Sept. 15, 2003 vs. Dallas (two interceptions and a fumble). Jacksonville had one turnover. The Giants are 0-3 this season when they commit more turnovers than their opponents. They are 2-10 in such games in three seasons under Coughlin, whose teams are 9-46 they cough up the ball more than the opposition. The Giants are also 0-3 this season and 1-7 under Coughlin when they commit three or more turnovers. The Giants did not record a sack for the second time this season. They did not have a sack at Seattle on Sept. 24. Jacksonville’s 165 rushing yards were the second-highest total by a Giants opponent this season. Atlanta ran for 223 yards on Oct. 15. Tiki Barber rushed for 27 yards, his lowest total since he had 20 yards against the Bills on Nov. 30, 2003. His 10 carries were his fewest since he had nine in Coughlin’s Giants debut at Philadelphia on Sept. 12, 2004. Barber rushed for 125 yards that day, including a 72-yard touchdown. Despite the low total, Barber led the Giants in rushing for the 74th consecutive game, extending his NFL record. Barber has rushed for 998 yards this season. He needs two more for his fifth consecutive 1,000-yard season and his sixth in seven years. Barber also caught one pass for 13 yards. His 40 total yards increased his career total to 16,541 and moved him past Thurman Thomas (16,532) and into 12th place on the NFL’s all-time list. The 40 yards increased his career total in yards from scrimmage (rushing and receiving only) to 14,814. That moved him past Hall of Famer Jim Brown (14,811) and into 14th place on the league’s career list. Eli Manning threw 41 passes, his highest total in a game this season that did not go into overtime. He completed 19 of them, a percentage of 46.3. Manning completed 43.8 percent of his passes vs. Chicago. This is the first time he has completed less than 50 percent of his passes in consecutive games since Dec. 5 (48.0 percent at Washington) and Dec. 12 (22.2 at Baltimore), 2004. Plaxico Burress caught five passes for 65 yards. He now has 6,001 career receiving yards. Brandon Jacobs’ first kickoff return of the season was a 28-yarder. Antonio Pierce led the Giants with 10 tackles (nine solo). Safety Will Demps also had nine solo tackles. Tom Coughlin and Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio succeeded on a combined three of four replay challenges, with the Giants getting two of three. In the second quarter, Manning threw down the middle for a 15-yard gain to Burress, who then fumbled the ball after he was hit by Gerald Sensabaugh. Linebacker Clint Ingram recovered the ball. Coughlin challenged the ruling, saying Burress’ knee was down before the ball came out. After review, referee Ron Winter ruled the pass was incomplete and did not charge the Giants with a timeout. With 5:44 remaining in the fourth period, David Garrard scrambled and the officials gave him a three-yard gain and a first down. Coughlin challenged the spot. After review, Winter upheld the challenge and said Garrard had gained two yards, setting up a fourth-and-one. Garrard was then stopped for no gain and Josh Scobee came on to kick a field goal. Later in the fourth quarter, Manning threw an 18-yard pass to the eight yard line to Tim Carter, who fumbled the ball away. Coughlin challenged the ruling, claiming the pass was incomplete. After review, Winter upheld the call on the field and the Giants lost the ball. Coughlin’s challenge scorecard: 2-1 on Monday, 3-3 this season and 9-16 in this three years with the Giants. In the third quarter, Manning threw to Burress for an apparent 57-yard gain. Del Rio challenged the ruling, claiming the pass was incomplete. After review, Winter overturned the ruling on the field and said the pass was incomplete. Giants opponents are 2-3 this season and 6-16 since Coughlin arrived. Coughlin’s trip home wasn’t exactly a sentimental journey. He came out of the locker room for warmups at 7:40 and immediately approached Rick Murray, a close friend of his who is afflicted with Lou Gehrig Disease and who was on the sideline in a wheelchair. Coughlin was greeted on the field by Tim Connolly, the Jaguars’ senior vice president for business development. But he stayed with the Giants – and far from the Jaguars – during the warm-up period. The coach was not outwardly emotional about is return to the stadium he literally rebuilt from the ground up. “My emotions were all geared toward playing well and winning,” he said. The Giants’ inactive list included five players who did not make the trip: tackle Luke Petitgout (fractured fibula), defensive ends Michael Strahan (foot) and Osi Umenyiora (hip flexor), cornerback Sam Madison (hamstring) and linebacker Brandon Short (quad). Also inactive were wide receiver Sinorice Moss (quad) and linebacker Tyson Smith. Tim Hasselbeck was the third quarterback. The Giants’ game captains were Barber, Pierce, Manning and Fred Robbins. The Giants Dec. 3 home game against the Dallas Cowboys will have a 4:15 p.m. kickoff. The game time was moved under the NFL’s flex scheduling procedures. The Seattle Seahawks at Denver Broncos game was selected as the Sunday night game, which is televised by NBC. Two games televised by FOX – Giants vs. Cowboys and Tampa Bay at Pittsburgh – were shifted to 4:15 p.m. |
