Giants' Barber is a cut above Nancy Gay (Hamp?) , San Francisco Chronicle Staff Writer Thursday, December 29, 2005 Quarterback Eli Manning has the famous pedigree, but running back Tiki Barber has all the yards and the responsibility for carrying the Giants' offense this season. Just as he did last season. While Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander and his 27 touchdowns have gotten the most MVP buzz, along with Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and his record-setting offense and 13-0 start, Barber leads the NFL in yards from scrimmage -- 2,127 (1,657 rushing, 470 receiving). He's been a 1,500-yard rusher two years in a row, and his 220-yard, two touchdown rushing performance in the Giants' 27-17 victory over the Chiefs on Dec. 17 established a franchise single-game record. So, why not Tiki for MVP? "Next to LaDainian Tomlinson, he's probably the best guy (with) the run and pass,'' Raiders linebacker Danny Clark said. "He's a guy we definitely have to keep our eyes on all game long. "It starts with the run game. You slow his run game and make him just a receiver and put all the weight on Eli Manning's shoulders." Giants coach Tom Coughlin, who brings his 10-5 team to the Coliseum for a Saturday night regular-season finale against the 4-11 Raiders, doesn't believe there should even be a debate. "There isn't any question -- I'm not speaking on behalf of any other player in the league, only on behalf of my player, Tiki Barber," Coughlin said this week. "He's had a very, very outstanding year and what he means to his team is without a doubt of great, great significance." With their shaved heads, ready smiles and warm personalities, Alexander and Barber are similar in style and appearance. So much so, Alexander was even mistaken for Barber by a waiter in Honolulu last February when both players appeared in the Pro Bowl. But Eli Manning -- who has big-play targets in Plaxico Burress, Jeremy Shockey and Amani Toomer but has hooked up with Barber for 48 receptions -- knows the difference. "It's definitely helpful to have a guy you can check the ball down to, you've got to get the ball in his hands somehow, and he's going to make big plays for you," the second-year quarterback said. "He's a true professional, and an outstanding player to work with." Briefly: Saturday's game did not sell out by the NFL's 5 p.m. Wednesday deadline and will not be broadcast on local television. |

Best jab of the week With as little bias as humanly possible, Tiki is without a doubt the real MVP of the league. Without him, we are a 4-5 win team at best, and THAT is technically how the MVP is supposed to be picked. How valuable the guy is to his team and how they would do without him. What really kills me is the Tom Brady talk......these people must be hittin' the pipe pretty hard. Alexander, Peyton, Edge.....all those guys are head and shoulders above Brady this year as far as MVP consideration. <_< |

No doubt. I mean, I can see the logic from the, 'Where would they be without him?' standpoint in that they won their division and are going to the playoffs despite a rash of injuries. But let's be real, they're in the AFC East. With the injuries at QB for the Jets, a (basically) rookie QB in Buffalo and a Miami team that was in shambles, it's not like that's a real accomplishment. They won that division by default. |
