WEBSTER PUMPED FOR START

By PAUL SCHWARTZ

December 29, 2005 -- GIANT NOTES

He remains a rookie, but Corey Webster doesn't feel like one.

"It's a lot of weeks into it, it's very hard to feel like a rookie right now," he said.

That's good news for the Giants, as Webster has been promoted for Saturday's regular-season finale in Oakland and will be the starting right cornerback, replacing the demoted Curtis Deloatch.

"It's a great challenge," said Webster, a second-round pick from LSU who has previously started only one game (at Seattle). "Every day we go into practice like we're a starter, so I think our coaches did a good job preparing me."

Webster moved in for Deloatch in last week's 35-20 loss in Washington. Deloatch will play in the nickel and dime packages while Webster gets first crack alongside Will Allen trying to contain Randy Moss and Jerry Porter.

Although coach Tom Coughlin said TE Jeremy Shockey is progressing, he sat out practice again with a sprained ankle and is listed as questionable. "Serious enough that he couldn't practice," Coughlin said of the injury. ...

LB Reggie Torbor (hamstring) also sat out. ... Oakland's leading rusher, RB LaMont Jordan (toe) is out, meaning Zack Crockett starts for the Raiders.

*

Giant LB Carlos Emmons on Tuesday lashed out at the team for putting him on injured reserve, claiming he could play in the playoffs despite a strained pectoral muscle.

"According to the medical people, that was not the case," Coughlin said. "He was at high risk and was at risk of re-injuring."

As for Emmons' harsh comments, Coughlin added, "He's a guy who had an awful lot invested in this season. He's very disappointed, as I understand it. The simple fact of the matter is the game has to be played. We needed to have some linebacker help. It was not an easy decision."

*

According to updated information by the NFL, if the Giants and Panthers finish with 11-5 records, the Giants would be the No. 3 seed in the NFC and the Panthers would be No. 4. The Giants would win the tie-breaker based on strength of schedule, as the Giants have an insurmountable 10-game lead in that category.

Good to see it. It's difficult to watch DeLoatch play the position at this point. He's horrible. Almost as difficult as watching Allen. <_<

I think DeLoatch hit the "Rookie wall" as this was his first year starting...

what do you expect with no safety help? granted he didn't play that well last week but you can't place all the blame on his shoulders.

It's also not as if Allen's skills with the ball in the air have just recently gone bad. He can cover anybody....then the ball goes into the air and he's as bad as any corner I've ever seen. It's as if every time is his first play ever.

Allen has benefited greatly from the pass rush. Notice that Strahan hasn't had a sack in the past two weeks and Allen had a poor, then horrendous week. No coincidence there. DeLoatch kept his job as long as he did due to the same pass rush we were getting.

No, it's not all Allen's fault. But he's one of the worst corners in the NFL when the ball is in the air.

Don't get too attached to him. He has a few weeks left. :nonono:

I'm glad Webster is pumped for this start.

He must have just been a tad excited about starting vs. Seattle. :dunno:
