Coughlin: Best tribute is to play Well vs. Skins BY RALPH VACCHIANO DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER The Giants have a big game on Sunday, and Wellington Mara would've loved it. What could be better than the Giants and Redskins fighting for first place in the NFC East inside a sold-out Giants Stadium on a brisk and sunny day? What he'd want most, the Giants know, is for them to put their grief aside and focus on winning. And they will. Eventually. But yesterday morning, football did not come first. "We gathered as a team this morning, we stood and we devoted a moment of silence to our beloved owner, Wellington Mara," Tom Coughlin said. "We asked God to accept his soul. We talked about honoring Mr. Mara in death and celebrating his life. "We talked about what his expectations would be for us. And the words and the phrase that I have used is that he would expect us to carry on. "I don't think he expects us to walk around with our lower lip down around the floor. We all are very much aware of this week. There is no real script for this week. Our emotions are literally all over the place." Then Coughlin paused and gave a hint of a smile before adding: "We do know that Mr. Mara, right now, is scheming somehow to try to beat the Redskins." Which is why Mara would've been happy to know that less than 24 hours after his death, after their brief pause, the Giants went back to the business of trying to get ready for Sunday's game. "We have to find a way to focus, to concentrate on the job at hand, knowing full well that is what he wants," Coughlin said. "This is what he would want us to do." The players seemed to get that message at what most said was a very emotional morning meeting. Coughlin's speech about Mara was passionate and sincere and, to many of them, moving. Said receiver David Tyree: "(Mara) obviously touched Coach's heart." He touched the hearts of many of his players, too, which is why most of the Giants (4-2) expect that his death will serve as inspiration for their showdown against the Redskins (4-2) and possibly even give them an emotional lift all season long. Still, as Coughlin said several times, "No one has a script for this." No one knows if the emotional blow of Mara's death will lift them up or weigh them down. "No doubt about it, this week there's going to be some opportunity for distraction," said center Shaun O'Hara. "But I think the challenge will be for us to go ahead and pursue a victory on Sunday like we would any other week. We know that's what he would want." "With Mara passing there's even more motivation," added linebacker Antonio Pierce. "Guys want to play harder. I don't think he would want nothing else but for us to get a W." One thing is for sure: Sunday's game, which will undoubtedly feature a pre-game tribute to Mara, will be the most emotional one most of them have ever experienced. "It's definitely going to be an emotional game," added Jeremy Shockey. "Hopefully we can keep winning and keep being successful for The Duke." Originally published on October 27, 2005 |
