Tiki has a clause in his contract, that if he doesn't gain a certain amount of yards (report is 1,100-1,200) this year, he'll forfeit anywhere between $500,000 and $1.5 mil next year. Same applies for next year, concerning 2007. Look, nobody wants to win more than Tiki, but he's also not unlike many players who want what's best for their bank account. Nothing really wrong with that, if it doesn't distrupt the team. Question is, do you complain in the media about not getting the ball --when you only had the ball on offense for 20 of 60 minutes-- because you thought it was the reason for losing, or because you don't want to pay back $1.5mil? Interesting. It's clear that if we had the ball in our hands more, he would have had more carries. So why is it becoming an issue that the offense isn't getting the ball to him, rather than the defense not being able to get off the field? $$ |

Almost all, well not all, but, many many, contracts have "incentive clauses". It's the easiest way around the salary cap. It's considered "bonus" money, not salary, and the incentive money is usually guaranteeed money since the majority of the "goals" are ones that are commnplace to the specific player. Barber running for 1000+ yards, Owens getting 10 TDs, Strahan making 5 sacks, Brady throwing for 3000 yards, etc... for the season. |

point is well taken Hampy and as BH stated all players have some kind of incentives built into their contracts. I also agree with its not necessarily going to be a game plan decsion to pass rather than run, what will determine the carries in many cases is score, clock management and defenses they are seeing. I think originally Manning was challenged by defensive coordinators on other teams due to the strategy of "make the kid beat us" and stack the line against Tiki. At this point I think that will change and open the game up for Tiki to run the ball more. Wins cure all kinds of problems and I'm sure Tiki is happy now. |

I HIGHLY doubt it has anything to do with the money! Tiki has never been like that. Remember how he dogged Strahan about his highly-public contract negotiations, then backed that up by keeping his own quiet. That's not what Tiki is about, it's not in him or his personality. If he reaches the benchmark, more power to him. If he doesn't & it didn't sacrifice the team's winning, I don't think he'll care too much about it. He's not screaming for them to give him the damn ball. He wanted the ball more in Dallas because he knew, AS DID EVERYONE ELSE, that it was the run that was working more than the passing. |

From the Daily News: Tiki Barber's (c.) reduced role raises possibility that his contract is squeezing him out of offense. Is the Giants' offensive philosophy based on football or economics? That's the issue Fox Sports' NFL insider Jay Glazer raised Sunday during an intriguing segment on the Foxies' pregame show. While discussing Tom Coughlin's use (or lack thereof) of a running game, Glazer indicated it is essential to follow the money. And in the case of Tiki Barber, Glazer said, yardage is not the only thing at stake when he carries the ball. "If he (Barber) doesn't rush for a certain number of yards this year, then his salary next year will drop anywhere from $500,000 to $1.2 million," Glazer said on Fox's "NFL Sunday." Glazer said Barber's contract has a similar clause for 2006. "If Tiki fails to reach 900-1,250 yards he would have to give the Giants back anywhere from $800,000 to $1.5 million," Glazer added. Despite their thrilling 24-23 win over Denver, the Giants' reluctance to run the football was evident and highlighted on CBS' telecast. After the Giants went three-and-out with 2:24 left in the third quarter, a clearly agitated Phil Simms said: "Run the football. You have to keep the defense honest." So, when you hear Glazer's report, which no one denied, questions follow. Is pressure coming down from the top? Would Giants GM/Media Darling Ernie Accorsi be consumed enough by the bottom line that he would keep the ball out of Barber's hands to whack his salary? Would the Giants improperly use Barber, who was drafted by the late George Young, to collect from the running back later? Hey, for an organization as profitable as the Giants, $1.5 mil is chump change. So, Accorsi would not nickel and dime Barber, would he? Realizing Barber is the Giants' all-time leading rusher, single-season leading rusher and all-time leader in receptions, and four TDs from being the all-time leader in rushing touchdowns, just the idea of him having to give back anything is strange. Even in a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately business. |

This is EXACTLY the reason that I started this thread. People think that Tiki is the holiest NFL player ever to walk the field. He plays hard, dedicated to the team and has been a great Giant. But let's not get silly. Would YOU want to give back $1.5mil?? Believe me....his shrewd and cunning way of using the media to get the ball back in his hands, was brilliant. Let's just call a spade a spade. He gained 1,500 yards last year and we were 6-10. So the 'give me the ball more and we'll win' theory, is not a very strong one. It's $$$. |

Bad coaching decisions? Debatable....... Dumb game plans? Maybe....... Situational football? Perhaps....... Relying on a Boy Wonder to hit for the quick 6? Could be.......... An NFL coach and GM whose careers depend on winning and losing games deliberately holding back one of their best players so as to save on some bonus money? Glazer seems less informed that I am.......... |

I agree, I just can't see that happening. We're trying to use our other weapons this year. |

I'm not buying this latest conspiracy theory. The money isn't exactly gonna break the bank and they have been imbedded before without anyone looking for some grand master plan to screw anyone out of money. Take this week's game. Out of 63 plays (including punts and FGs) Barber had the ball 25 times (19 rush/ 6 rec). The rushing alone leaves one man with damn near one-third of the entire workload. One-third. Coughlin has a 'Manning' toy to play with. Of course he is gonna be pass happy. |

<_< Why ,....Tiki's a football player and I've never know a football player that "didn't" want the ball .Let's not look for things that aren't there . 1)Tiki 2)Burress 3)Toomer 4)Shocky ....I'm pretty sure they all want the ball .
