Giants Will Watch Miller and Wait Out the Market By RICHARD LEZIN JONES Published: May 6, 2005 In the week since the disclosure that Jim Miller, the Giants' backup quarterback, would miss at least three months with a hip injury, team officials have given more indications about what they will not do to address the absence than what they will do. Talks to bring in Vinny Testaverde as a replacement for Miller stalled last week. And it appears that the team is not currently interested in another veteran backup, like Jeff Blake. Ralph Cindrich, Blake's agent, said a few days ago that he had heard from several teams, but not the Giants. As the Giants prepared for this weekend's rookie minicamp, General Manager Ernie Accorsi said yesterday that the team was content to evaluate Miller's condition as he recovered from last week's operation to repair a torn hip labrum. Accorsi said there was no urgency to make a decision about whether to stick with Miller or sign a replacement. The team has a full-squad minicamp next month and training camp in July. Although veteran players are not required to report for this weekend's camp, which begins today, Miller's health and the uncertainty surrounding who will back up Eli Manning are among the Giants' most pressing off-season concerns. The issue also underscores the pressure that accompanies the 24-year-old Manning as he enters his first full season as the starter. He has seven starts on his résumé and will be the Giants' most experienced quarterback until Miller recovers or if a more experienced backup is signed. Under the worst-case scenario, Miller could be out for up to four months, which would keep him from participating in training camp. But Accorsi said the team was hopeful that Miller would be ready in 12 weeks, allowing him to contribute during camp. There is, however, some question of whether he would be at full strength. Because Miller is familiar with the offense, he will be able to contribute during film study and in quarterback meetings. But should the Giants grow impatient with his inability to practice, they could add another quarterback. Doug Flutie visited the Giants on April 28, but he signed with New England less than 24 hours later. After losing out on Flutie, the Giants have stepped back from the free-agent market. The pool of available veteran quarterbacks is relatively shallow - featuring Testaverde, Blake and Kordell Stewart - but others may enter the market when teams make cuts June 1 or later for salary-cap relief. Testaverde seemed like a good fit for the Giants. Aside from his 18 seasons of N.F.L. experience, he has ties to the area as a native of Elmont, N.Y. Testaverde's agent, Michael A. Azzarelli, said discussions with the Giants never advanced beyond the exploratory stages. Although Testaverde expected to compete for a starting job as recently as last June, when he was released by the Jets and signed with Dallas, Azzarelli said that Testaverde would be satisfied to be a backup. Azzarelli said Testaverde was intrigued by the possibility of joining the Giants. "At this particular stage in his career, it's perfect for him," Azzarelli said. "It's exactly what he wants. He'd be closer to home. He's perfect to be in a situation like that." Reports in the past week have all but ruled out the Giants as potential suitors for Testaverde, but such assertions could be part of the posturing that surrounds contract negotiations. It is a tactic the Giants employed earlier this off-season. In March, the Giants took the unusual step of announcing that they were no longer interested in receiver Plaxico Burress and that they had rescinded a contract offer to him. A week later, Burress had agreed to a contract, and the team assigned him a locker next to Manning's. |
