Giants' QB search hits a snag

Saturday, April 30, 2005

With Jim Miller and Doug Flutie doing what they've done so often - getting hurt and scrambling away, respectively - the Giants suddenly are without a veteran backup quarterback behind Eli Manning.

The team confirmed Friday that Miller, 34, signed last month to be the backup/tutor for Manning, recently underwent hip surgery that will sideline him until late August. He will miss most of training camp, if not all of it.

Flutie, 42, who visited Giants Stadium on Thursday, decided Friday to sign a one-year deal with the New England Patriots to back up Tom Brady. He returns to his home area, where he became a legend during his Heisman Trophy-winning career at Boston College.

"He went down to New York and was interested, but his heart is in New England," said Kristen Kuliga, Flutie's agent. "His daughter is going to be a senior in high school, and to be with her and be involved with all of her activities was very important to him."

So do the Giants wait on Miller, who has had an injury-filled career, relying on inexperienced fifth-year man Jesse Palmer as their backup until the veteran returns? Or do they search for another veteran from a market that includes only one name that fits their need, Vinny Testaverde?

"We haven't decided what we are going to do yet," general manager Ernie Accorsi said. "We might sign a veteran to be No. 2, or we might just add an arm until Miller is back. There still might be some quarterbacks released."

The Giants have made preliminary contact with Testaverde's agent and the veteran is believed to want to continue playing.

Testaverde, 41, was the Dallas Cowboys' starter last season, but prior to that basically served as Chad Pennington's guru for two seasons with the Jets. The Cowboys released Testaverde after they brought in Drew Bledsoe from Buffalo.

Other unsigned veterans include Jeff Blake, Kordell Stewart, Shaun King, Chris Chandler, Jeff George and Quincy Carter. None of them really fits the Giants' profile, a veteran who will accept backup status.

Miller, who was Brady's veteran backup last year for the Super Bowl champion Patriots, suffered his latest injury during the Giants' off-season program. Drafted by Pittsburgh in 1994, he has played in just 37 NFL games, none since 2002, when he suffered a right shoulder injury.

Flutie was with the Pats from 1987 through 1989 before embarking on a stellar Canadian Football League career. He joins Rohan Davey, who has thrown just 19 passes in three seasons; former Raven starter Chris Redman, still recovering from shoulder surgery; and draft pick Matt Cassel, who backed up two Heisman winners, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at Southern California, in support of Brady.

PLEASE, NO VINNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miller, 34, sustained the injury earlier this month while working out during the Giants' off-season training program, said his agent, Joseph Michael Linta.

I guess he got the hip past the physical by it being healthy at the time.

What they need is a Frank Reich, Jason Garrett or Don Strock type. A guy who can be on the bench a long while and when needed come in and win games for you and then go quietly back to the bench. I doubt Palmer qualifies though to be fair there aren't any others of that type out there.
