SERBY'S SUNDAY Q&A WITH ...SHOCKEY

May 1, 2005 -- The Post's Steve Serby chatted this week with the Giants' free-spirit tight end about everything from Tom Coughlin to Paris Hilton

Q: What was the first thing Tom Coughlin said to you when he saw you Thursday?

A: "Nice haircut. You look great!"

Q: What did you say to him?

A: "I feel better than I look. It's all nutrition, coach."

Q: Did you talk about the offseason workout controversy?

A: Not at all. It didn't come up one time.

Q: That surprises me.

A: (Laughs). I was surprised too!

Q: Best tight end in football?

A: In my opinion, yours truly.

Q: You weren't the best tight end last year, though.

A: I wasn't even the best Jeremy Shockey, much less the best tight end in football. When I'm healthy, I'm the best tight end in football. A lot of people are faster than me, stronger than me; but I can promise you this - no one's heart is bigger than mine. No one wants it more than me.

Q: You seem to have a fear of not being great.

A: I wouldn't call it a fear. It's just so easy just to be OK. I want to be great. I want people to remember me for a long time. I don't want to be just OK.

Q: Why are you so different from the norm?

A: My heart ticks different than others. I've always been very competitive. If I play blackjack, I don't care about losing money - I get (ticked) off at the dealer for beating me.

Q: The All-Shockey Opponent Team?

A: It would be the throwbacks. Donovan McNabb; LaDainian Tomlinson; Tony Gonzalez; LaVar Arrington; Sean Taylor; Chad Johnson; Dan Morgan; Roy Williams; Brian Dawkins; Jeremiah Trotter; Tedy Bruschi; Tom Brady.

Q: The All-Shockey Female Team?

A: Angelina Jolie; Tyra Banks; Adriana Lima.

Q: Would you double-date with Derek Jeter?

A: (Laughs) I don't know ... he's got a lot of pretty girlfriends. I'd have to find me a good one to go on a double-date with him.

Q: How are New York women unique?

A: They're feisty. They have an aura about them.

Q: How many marriage proposals do you get per week?

A: I get a lot of letters from mothers: "Hey, my daughter's a huge fan of yours, is there any way you can meet [her]?"

Q: Weirdest or funniest letter you've gotten?

A: The weirdest would probably have to be an old lady sending her picture to me in a bathing suit ... A 13-year-old kid sent me his arm cast and asked me to sign it. I signed the cast, put it in a box and sent it back to him.

Q: Describe your on-field personality.

A: I'm real competitive, If somebody says something, I'm going to say something back. If someone cheapshots me, I'm going to try to cheapshot them back. I don't want to block 'em OK, I want to block 'em great.

Q: Craziest thing you've ever done?

A: In high school, we used to jump off these cliffs 75 or 80 feet high. If you didn't wear shoes, when you hit the water with your feet, it would rip your feet open. You'd have to jump out three feet from the ledge to clear the rocks. A farmer would be chasing us and shooting his gun up in the air after we'd been doing it.

Q: How good will Eli Manning be?

A: Eli's going to be an exceptional player in this league. He is going to live up to his expectations, no doubt about it.

Q: Best dresser on Giants?

A: Tiki Barber.

Q: Best trash-talker in the NFL?

A: Terrell Owens.

Q: Where do you rank?

A: Last year I didn't rank anything. I knew I wasn't going to have a stellar season ... because I didn't get a chance to practice and prepare myself. Last year humbled me.

Q: What's it like being Jeremy Shockey?

A: I can't complain. I've been blessed.

Q: What's the worst thing about being Jeremy Shockey?

A: People already label me before they even know me. I meet people all the time: "Oh, you're not like what I expected!" That's the worst thing about being Jeremy Shockey - I have a bad reputation. People think I'm a bad person.

Q: Does your national image bother you?

A: I think my Bad Boy image bothers me. I don't like being called a Bad Boy ... I go out and have fun and people blow it out of proportion. People that know me know I'm a good person at heart.

Q: Do you drink anymore?

A: I drink maybe a glass of wine. I'll drink some beer every once in a while after a hard week of work. My last two (injury-plagued) years, I felt like I wasn't part of the team as much. I was depressed. I would definitely drink more than I should have.

Q: 100 catches and 10 TDs ... is that possible?

A: Very.

Q: This year?

A: Yes, sir. Very possible.

Q: Would you welcome less blocking and more route-running?

A: Yes. Of course. What am I gonna say, "No, I want to do more blocking?"

Q: Do you think you'll get more of an opportunity in the passing game?

A: Yes. I think we picked up some good O-linemen, man. The new system last year was hard for everybody to grasp.

Q: How will Plaxico Burress help you?

A: I'm not going to get double-teamed as much.

Q: (LB) Antonio Pierce?

A: I remember he was a very smart player. He was telling LaVar Arrington where to go, what to do. And he can cover, man.

Q: Why do you want to retire a Giant?

A: Ernie Accorsi and Jim Fassel drafted me. I'll be loyal to my friends for life. I'll be loyal to the organization that drafted me.

Q: What does Mother's Day mean to you?

A: It's special. My mother raised me and my brother on her own. It wasn't the easiest for her raising two wild kids. It's a day I'll send my mother flowers and chocolates and tell her how much I love her.

Q: The steroid issue?

A: I'm just glad I play for a league that really enforces it a lot more than the baseball league does. It's horrible for the game. It's bad for your body. Look what happened to Lyle Alzado.

Q: Celebrities you'd like to meet?

A: Muhammad Ali and Pope Benedict XVI. ***SIDE NOTE: Man I'd want to be a fly on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel when that takes place!

Q: Which celebrities that you've met do your friends back home ask you about?

A: Hugh Hefner, Donald Trump, Paris Hilton.

Q: Favorite sports movie?

A: "The Natural."

Q: What would be the title of the movie about your life?

A: "The Competitor."

Q: Who would you pick to play you?

A: Russell Crowe. We have some of the same facial features; he's definitely better looking than me.

Q: What is it like in the Giants Stadium tunnel before kickoff?

A: Oh man! Seeing those hard-working, blue-collar people wearing my jersey, I get chillbumps. It's amazing.

My boy sounds good, looks good. Hopefully, the Shockey we all know and love will be back in full force this year.

I imagine Eli is salivating at the thought of haveing healthy Shockey & Toomer to throw to along with Burress and if for some reason none of them is open he has Tiki. Could be very fun.

I honestly think, if everyone stays healthy, the Giants passing game will be a very pleasant surprise to all of us.

Agreed.

I know some people who are content being a bunch of gloomy bastards and have no faith whatsoever that anything will happen offensively.

As true fans we have to have faith in our team. The FO went out and brough itn players who should make the Giants a better team, If people can't see that oh well. Also we've had about 40 some players on IR the last few years, That's the one thing that has to stop injuries are killing the Giants.
