Shockey says there's no rift with Eli ‘(The media) just kind of blew it out of proportion,’ Giants' TE says ![]() EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Bowing to the wishes of his quarterback, tight end Jeremy Shockey joined Eli Manning on Thursday at the New York Giants’ offseason workouts. advertisement Shockey, who has been working on his own at the University of Miami, said Thursday’s workout would probably be his only one with the team until the mandatory minicamp in June. “It’s good to have Shock back,” Manning said after throwing passes to Shockey for about 45 minutes. “He looks good out there. He’s been working hard in Miami.” Manning recently criticized Shockey for not attending the voluntary workouts here. Shockey downplayed any rift between the two. “Eli understood from the get-go,” Shockey said. “(The media) just kind of blew it out of proportion. He made a comment and a fire started, and it was really nonsense. He knows what I’m about. I don’t know why I’m catching the heat. Other players aren’t here working out. Am I the only one not here? He pointed me out because you all asked him questions. “No matter what I do, there’s always controversy in the air,” Shockey said. “I can’t win for losing. I just went the extra mile this year to help myself.” Shockey, who missed the latter part of last season with a back injury, has spent the last month running with former Hurricanes Edgerrin James and Santana Moss at Miami. Manning said there is plenty of time for him and Shockey to get in sync for next season. “It’s not his job to do what I’d like him to do,” Manning said. “He’s doing what he has to do to get better. I’m just being selfish a little bit, wanting him here so we can throw. That helps me out. But we’ve got to do what’s best for ourselves.” |
