EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – There is no sinister motive, no hidden agenda behind Jeremy Shockey’s decision to work out this offseason at the University of Miami. TE Jeremy Shockey spoke with reporters after working out with QB Eli Manning and teammates at Giants Stadium Thursday. “It’s about me wanting to win games and getting back to a championship level,” Shockey said today. “That’s what it’s about. Point blank, that’s it. “I want to hit them before they hit me, like I did my first year. I’m going to try to play with a swagger, a chip on my shoulder and a bad attitude. I don’t know if it’s going to help me, I just thought it would give me a chance to perform like I did.” Shockey made his first appearance in the Giants’ voluntary offseason conditioning program yesterday. Today, he caught passes from Eli Manning, Jesse Palmer and Jared Lorenzen on the Giants Stadium field for about 45 minutes. He will return to the stadium tomorrow for more running and weightlifting. “It was good to have Shockey back,” Manning said. “He called and said he’d be here to throw Thursday. He looks good out there. He’s obviously been working and doing his stuff in Miami. We got back to work and had a good day.” Coach Tom Coughlin would prefer Shockey and all the players participate regularly in the team’s program. “I understand his philosophy,” Shockey said. “It’s voluntary. I’m not trying to burn anybody down or put any programs down. I’m just trying to do what’s best for me and also help the team.” Shockey said he weighs 250-252 pounds and that he is in excellent condition. “I’ve never felt better,” he said. “I’ve read a lot of books about nutrition. I can do all this hard work but one bad hit or one accidental play I can be hurt. All I’m trying to do right now is give myself a chance. I’ve talked to the strength coaches, I talked to the head coach today. The strength coaches – you can talk to them about me in the weight room, my physique, my body fat and my weight. Shockey hauled in a few passes from QB Eli Manning Thursday. “No matter what I do controversy is always going to be in the air. I went the extra mile this year to try to help myself. I showed up in great shape. You can talk to all the coaches. They’ll lobby for me and they’ll know this is the best I’ve looked since they’ve been here.” The veterans are off next week, when Shockey plans to be in Miami. The only mandatory veteran mini-camp begins on June 1. Shockey was non-committal when asked if he would return to New Jersey prior to the camp. “I don’t know (when I’ll be back),” he said. “This is not an issue about timing. This is about me being committed to the team. I’m not trying to separate myself from anybody, there’s no contract disputes, nothing. It’s just me trying to get better.” Last season, Shockey led the Giants with 61 receptions for 666 yards and six touchdowns. But he was not selected to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his three-year career. Shockey wants to be the dynamic, productive and inspirational player he was as a rookie. He believes taking part in the rigorous workouts at his alma mater give him the best chance to return to that form. In Miami, he works out with current Hurricane players, as well as a sizeable group of NFL veterans – both Miami alums and those who went to other schools - including Bubba Franks, Santana Moss, Jevon Walker and new teammate Plaxico Burress. “I worked out with a lot of guys,” Shockey said. “I want to be the best player I can be, and in order for me to do that I think I have to be pushed by people I know can push me. I’m not trying to cause any controversy. I’m just trying to do what’s best for my physical (condition). I’ve had injuries the past couple of years and I’m trying to fix that. “(The work) is hard. It’s hard every day – it’s always something different. Plaxico, Jevon Walker, Bubba Franks – all these guys that talk back and forth during the workouts. The young guys talk to us – ‘hurry up old man’ – they say all kinds of stuff to motivate each other. To be honest with you, it’s tough. I could have taken the easy way and come back and done the workouts here, or I could have gone there and accepted the challenge and made it tough on myself every day.” A few weeks ago, Manning said he had called Shockey to try to convince one of his key receivers to participate in the program. Shockey returned the call, and the exchange was portrayed as a rift between the two players. Both Manning and Shockey said the characterization was false. “There’s nothing between us at all,” Manning said. “We’re on great terms and always have been. Shockey has always been supportive of me and I know he’s going to do what’s best for him and the team and make us a great combination. When he gets up here for camp we’ll have plenty of time to get our timing down and get to where we need to be for next season.” Asked if the two had cleared the air, Shockey said, “The air was never foggy. We talked, it was fine. We went out and played catch and got our timing down. A fire started and it was really nonsense. I’m competitive, just like him. If I was in his shoes, I’d want everybody here.” With Tiki Barber running and a more experienced Manning throwing passes to Shockey, Burress and Amani Toomer, the Giants believe they will have a more productive offense this season. “I think the offense needs to get a chip on our shoulder,” Shockey said. “In prior seasons with the Giants the defense has always been doing the talking. It would be nice if the offense made a statement.” After challenging himself in the Miami heat, Shockey intends to make his statement the team’s loudest. This subject has been beaten to death, but I still support Shockey's decision to work out in Miami. Judging by the pics on Giants.com he looks in better shape than ever. Again, in the end it all falls on Shockey's shoulders. If he has a great year he will be praised and if he doesn't he will be slammed. If they want everyone there they shouldn't make them "VOLUNTARY!!". |

He looks like he's in good shape, but he's still catching the ball too close to his body.

That is only one catch and there will be plenty of time to work on that. ** Note: See how optimistic I am. That is the difference between it being a Friday and not a Monday!! ** |

About time he cut the 1982 mop on his head. Looks a little lighter, doesn't he? More attention on steroids does funny things to guys in sports nowadays.

Amen to that. I'd want to see the whole sequence that led to that picture before saying whether he was catching too close to his body or not. |

Actually, I couldn't care less where he catches the ball, as long as he stops dropping them. |

Exactly. The operative word is catch. I don't care if he's doing it between his knees. As for the hair: I like it long. |
